looking for some opinions on the Audio Technica LP60.

I need a new turn table, my Sony broke. i really just cant afford anything crazy right now. A local music store is selling this for a fair price, and i also have 60$ worth of gift cards for there, so im super tempted to get this.
I know a lot of users on here (and just record collectors in general) recommend the model just above this, but is this one a bad table??

    help.

I have no experience listening to it. However, it doesn't have a counter weight and, as a result, will be a lot harsher on your records than others.

    Yeah, this.

Save up a bit more if you can. Your records will thank you in the long run.

I've used one for almost 10 years and have never had a problem with it. I got it as an entry level turntable and just haven't felt the need to upgrade, really.

I've bought many from Amazon, it's only happened to me once when I ordered Rented World... Maybe they have issues with The Menzingers records. Got some random record, returned it and eventually picked it up the next time I saw them

will it really effect the records that much though? like, i have a collection of about 130. thats a lot of albums, its not like im spinning the same vinyl record more than 3 times a month ya know? cause usually record listening for me is a lot more of an involved listen where ive set aside time to listen.

It's usually hooked up to an Apple Hi-Fi that I've had forever. If I want to listen with headphones I'll hook up a little AMP and go that route.

I mean, vinyl is a physical medium. The moment the needle makes contact with the wax, you get degradation of the quality. Given that, having a counterbalance is what prevents the tonearm from either being too light and skipping across the record, or too heavy and digging into the grooves, wearing them down at a faster rate than normal play. Will it kill your record after 2 plays? No. But, if vinyl is a medium that you're invested in and you plan on having and listening to these records for years down the road, my recommendation is still to save a bit more up front by purchasing a table with at least a counterbalance (anti-skate mechanism is nice too because that's what prevents the needle from pressing too hard against the inner side of the grooves).

If you're looking for the best bang for your buck, see what you can get used at a pawnshop or your local craigslist or kijiji or facebook swap and shop. Or, if you're looking for new, the uTurn Orbit Basic is $179 and is a bare essentials table that gives you what you need

I might add, I have the uTurn Orbit and confirm this this is an extremely well made player, that includes the counterweight that @dylan is discussing here. They also have an option to purchase a $40 lever to assist in dropping the tonearm. Even if you don't get it though (I haven't, I enjoy dropping the tonearm myself and have steady enough hands....plus its a lot of fun) it's still a great starter turntable. Also, they have about a 2 week turnaround from when you place your order, and you receive it at your door. I emailed them about this and the customer service responded within 24 hours.
Another important thing to note about this is that you will most likely need a Phono preamp. So overall, you will most likely be spending $215 for the entire set-up. Just an FYI.
Also, the colors are really nice...most of my friends are pretty envious! Let me know if you have any other questions about this turntable.

And that's why you always leave a note.

This is the turntable I have as well. It's a great entry-level table. Never had any issues like you would with say, a Crosley or something. Audio-Technica makes really good stuff.

Just pay attention to what model they're selling - the one on the left is the original LP60 (should be $99) - the one on the right is the Bluetooth version of it (LP60BT) - and that's like $169 I think. Probably not worth the extra money just for the Bluetooth functionality unless you've got a really nice BT speaker system.

Cool, I'll keep that in mind thanks!
You lucky Americans though... Everything is way more expensive in Canada because of the exchange rate. Like the AT LP120 can get up to 500$ here.

Hmm, I'm actually pretty intrigued by this turn table now. I'm buying some nice speakers and receiver today off some someone. I will check to see how much this turn table would cost me after shipping and the exchange rate. Also I'm going to do some research.

Does it every get annoying having to lift the arm off at the end of a record?

yeah do the uturn if you want a cheap one.

having to lift the arm off at the end of a record? i have the AT-LP120 which is not a great table and i've always had to do it haha

  18. Kennedy

    loomasleep.bandcamp.com Prestigious

huh, interesting. my crappy sony had an auto lift for records ending. i thought the AT-LP120 did too.

I mean, unless you are putting on a record before bed and forget to lift the arm before you fall asleep, it's not too much of a hassle.

Lifting the arm at the end is a feature prominent in most players haha. Let me know if you have any other questions or want pictures or etc.!

My AT 120 has worked so well for me that dad eventually bought one for himself to use with his records.

See my problem is finding these players in retail without having to order them online. Shipping to Canada with exchange rate adds at LEAST $50 to the price, and even $50 is very hopeful

Yeah, so I just checked a couple local Best Buys. Here in Canada the AT LP120 runs for $400. How much are you Americans buying it for?

  24. cwhit

    about 300 on amazon

I got mine roughly 3 1/2 years ago for 230 on Amazon.
