I didn't realize Josh Middleton from Sylosis was filling in for Tom in Architects. They are on a hiatus now. I was really hoping for a new Sylosis record this year. Dormant Heart is top tier metal for me.

In other releases from 2016 that I missed until now, this new one from Teethgrinder is pretty good (Not Toothgrinder, it's confusing, I know). Solid mix of grind, death metal, and black metal influences.

Every time I read comments on their live videos, I keep seeing the same shit about stage presence, etc. But you know what, I'd rather see a guy who can replicate the album rather than running around like an idiot.

Then again, if he can do both, why not.

By the way, their debut album had a different vocalist, who sounded roughly the same. Their music during that time had a bit more of a "groove" to it, but still really heavy and technical.

eeh, people seem to love hating on them for some reason - but it's undeniable that they can play

pumped for their Nuclear Blast debut

It's undeniable they can play, but they've had their fair share of issues in the past with drama (supposedly recording their music at half-speed, the primary guy in the band being an asshole to other members, etc). Here's a few articles on the matter (though I hate giving Metalsucks the clicks):

As this point, I have no strong feelings either way for these guys. They're talented, but I grew out of the wankery that they put out on Dingir and Embryonic Anomaly a while ago.

Well, as hilarious as those accusations are, the reality is that they can play live no problem.

It should be worth noting that Infant Annihilator drummer Aaron Kitcher recorded the drums for Rings of Saturn's latest release. While their current drummer can play mostly at those speeds, that would be a small knock against yet another one of their albums.

But either way, I'm a huge fan of the vocalist, primarily, since he can do the guttural lows and high with ease.

99% of the stuff I'm into nowadays is far removed from wankery, but every once in a while I enjoy it, it's ok, and this band hits the spot for some reason haha

drama bores me, I'm just here for the jams... but thx for putting that together

they can wank pretty hard but they couldn't write a single good riff to save their lives from what I heard. their style is really gaudy and cartoon like

I shut it right off and listened to some good tech death instead

    Any recs?

I prefer melodic death metal or tech, but the vocals have to cover a wide range. The monotone shit is so annoying.

I mean, if you like djent breakdown after djent breakdown, it's cool

no one said they had the sickest riffs... there's space for everyone, even the cartoon bands...

they do have some sick riffs, tho :P

I wasn't decrying their overall talent at all. They can play their instruments with some of the best. I don't care for their music at all now, but the drama was funny to me four years ago. I was just sharing some thoughts. :)

I can't emphasize how in love with EC I am. I don't know which one of you it was, but when AP was still running someone in the other metal thread posted their song "I Am the Hammer" and it instantly became my most anticipated album of the year. Like, I don't even listen to that genre of metal and I could not stop listening to it. Sumerlands is just as good if not better, but they're more traditional and I prefer that element of weirdness/fantasy in my heavy metal, in the vein of Manilla Road.

I don't know why I'm so damn picky. I can get on board with the third album, but not the other two.

There is a certain sound that I look for both in the music and the vocals.

Thundercats album The Covenant is another example of my preferred style. Suicide Silence to a certain extent, then Rings of Saturn. I'm sure there are more.

    If you haven't heard Thundercats:

Just stumbled on these guys, not sure how I feel since the video is horseshit.

After hearing this high praise, I'm downloading both of those releases and giving them good listens after my meeting this morning. Will report back afterwards.
