  2. Has anyone gone to the AMC Best Picture Showcase? Thinking of doing it this time. I keep telling myself to every year and then chicken out.

  3. I might this year..I've seen like no movies this year and it would be fun to knock out 10 in a weekend

By the time nominations come out I've usually seen everything already anyway. The problem this year is that it was so backloaded, especially in December, and so many films have only come out in limited releases at one random theater in NY and LA, that seeing them all in advance has proven frustrating. I'm going to try and knock out a couple this weekend but beyond that I'm not sure.

  6. What should I see today: La La Land or Fences?

I chose Fences and was happy I did. I assume La La Land is a fairly happy movie while Fences is going to make you sad as fuck

Just saw Lion today. Surprised there's no thread for it. Seems like it's flying under the radar on here. I liked it a good deal, thought Dev Patel was great.

Because I like the voice cast, even though I know it's probably not the true film or however you want to say it

Fair enough. My only experience with dubbing has been Ghibli films and I find they can never translate/convey the same emotion with the dubbed dialogue. I think that comes from the Japanese language being so different from English though.

I didn't even know Zucchini was getting a dub. Cool that it should see some sort of wider release here. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

ABC declined to order more episodes for this season of Conviction, which means it's likely going to be canceled, which sucks because I'm really starting to like it after binging the last six episodes. It looks like Timeless, which was in the same Monday at 10pm timeslot, isn't getting very good ratings, either, so the fate of that show is also in the air, even though NBC already ordered 3 more episodes to a total of 16. Unlike Conviction, which started out okay and gradually became good, Timeless started out good and didn't get much better (but it never got worse). It's like Doctor Who without the space aliens, or Legends of Tomorrow without the superpowers, and it only goes into the past, but if the first five seasons of Supernatural are any indication, Kripke probably already has a lot planned for this world. Conviction deals with controversial political issues, but mostly opts out for the surprise ending that isn't bold enough to really take a side one way or the other. The show does do a good job of developing the main characters' arcs, as well as normalizing non-heteronormativity. Timeless highlights the racism/sexism of the past, but it never lets that get in the way of the characters' arcs and development the way I felt Doctor Who did with Martha. The story is quite good, if a bit overwrought, Abigail Spencer makes the best facial expressions, and the costume design is stellar. Verdict: if you're looking for something good that likely won't stick around long, watch these shows, haha.

edit: oh hey Timeless has a married gay couple. Maybe I should've written this post after watching the most recent episode.
