Nothing much has changed due to the James Deen allegations. As progressive as porn can be with women's autonomy the same old abuses still pop up :redanger:

Porn is a form of sexual violence. There is no reform to be found within it. That doesn't make the women passive victims or that we shouldn't support their rights, it is just an acknowledgement of the extent to which it is built around a reified form of sexuality that involves the total submission of women.

I find it hard to believe that porn is a form of sexuality that always involves the total submission of women. I know a lot of women have found empowerment in forms of porn that allow them to take complete control of the format, specifically camming. Some women have even said it's helped them reclaim their sexuality after abuse or an assault. I wouldn't call the industry as a whole progressive, but I certainly don't think it's always damaging to women, and I think the idea that the visual representation of a woman's sexuality can only be that of her submission is a very narrow idea of women's sexuality.

Camming seems a bit different from mass produced pornography. Still I think the thing is that porn is largely made for the consumption of men. Yes women can watch porn, but it's not really made for them since I'm willing to bet men actually spend money on it at a far higher rate than women do. Given the premise that porn is made for men, it's hard to believe it can ever be a truly safe environment for women. Incidents like the Nikki Benz shoot affirm this. I understand the empowering nature of it for some women, especially in camming, but even when camming women are subject to a ton of verbal abuse and harassment

That's not a good argument to make against porn considering women are subject to a ton of verbal abuse and harassment just for existing. I agree mass produced porn isn't a truly safe environment for women, but I think that's more because of the involvement of men in production and direction rather than the nature of pornography. Camming absolutely is different, but it's still a form of pornography.

Yeah but that arena is one of the places where it's most prevelant. But yeah I think when talking about the porn industry it's about mass produced stuff, camming is a form of it but it's not really part of the big industry

I don't really know where to post this. Over the summer I confronted the "friend" who sexually assaulted me back in 2004. It's complicated because I kept quiet about it for a long, long time, and after I moved away, my family stayed friends with this guy and his wife (who was also one of my good friends). At the time this summer my mom wasn't really that supportive, kind of alluded that she's been assaulted in her past and that shit happens, what did she want me to do about it, etc. So I got really drunk, made this fucker sit down and admit what he did, then told him I wouldn't ever tell the cops or his wife (she can get...crazy).

I found out on Christmas Eve that they are still hanging out with this guy and his wife. They didn't see a problem with it because they thought everything was taken care of and settled and we could all just move on.

So I told mom and dad flat out, yes I talked to him but that DOESN'T CHANGE WHAT HE DID TO ME and YES, I would prefer if you never hung out with them again. Now I get to have this conversation, again, with my brother, who I thought understood this, and told me at the time of confrontation that he and my SIL hadn't really been hanging out with them anyway, so not a problem.

I don't fucking like talking about this, and I feel like I have had to explain this to them way too many fucking times, and should it not be CLEAR AS DAY that even if your kid/sibling "talked" to their assaulter, you should no longer associate with that person? I already don't want to go home to visit because I'm worried about my sobriety, but they are making this even easier to skip going home, and it's really fucking sad.

tl;dr: my family still hangs out with the guy who assaulted me because they thought my talk with him over the summer made everything fine and dandy and let's move on

edit: I just texted my brother and SIL. wish me luck on this, maybe the 3rd time's the charm.

edit 2: brother texted back on the afternoon of the 27th with "Okay I can respect that"

Thank you Ian. I don't like giving ultimatums and even just now I didn't, wrote "would really really prefer" if they stopped hanging out with him. Bleh.

"If women's work still isn't getting rigorous intellectual attention for its own sake, it doesn't sound like progress. But it seems as if this particular obstacle is one of our own making. Watching the I Love Dick pilot, which has gotten a decent amount of attention despite not being very good, I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing. A melodramatic voiceover and bright red screens emblazoned with text convey the letter-writing aspect of the story; to demonstrate the desire Kraus explains beautifully in her novel, actress Kathryn Hahn basically sits slack-jawed in a restaurant in awe of Kevin Bacon, who plays Dick. She might as well have licked her lips. The subtle failure of Chris's movie in the novel—which occasions the entire writing project—is turned into a rage onscreen. It's uncomfortable, but not in the good way the novel is. It seems to focus not on how the character interacts with the world and vice versa, but just on the character.

In an interview about the upcoming series, Soloway told New York magazine, "I don't know how to write about anything other than myself. I can't write about dragons, I don't care about crime, I don't want to write a hospital show. I only want to write about somewhat unlikable Jewish women having really inappropriate ideas about life and sex." This is the kind of thing that elicits cheers from the feminist corners of the internet, but to me, it doesn't sound radical. It sounds like Girls."
