I'm bummed it sounds like those shows will be soonish and I just drained the last of my concert savings for the Trio shows next months.

 

14 songs!? I wonder if they will all make the "deluxe" album

 

Wow I'm very pumped for this deluxe edition now. And I will 100% be at one of those California album shows.

 

When I last saw them play an album (untitled) the encore included m+ms, dick lips, apple shampoo, dysentery gary, mutt, going away to college and natives. This was in 2013 so I really hope they do something similar.

 

I'm excited. Idk fully what comes out in 2017 but it would be funny if the bonus songs were higher on my AOTY list next year than California this year haha. Not that California did bad for me, probably 3-5 range. Still loving it

 

Where is the darker pre-Feldmann material?

 

You're lucky you're getting to those Trio shows.

 

Yeah plus they haven't toured Europe promoting the California album so it makes sense what they're doing. Either way I'm just happy we're getting more new music from the band after years of teases and promises.

 

After reading that article three things crossed my mind:

1. I can't wait to hear the deluxe album. I wonder how it will hold up vs. California as Travis already thinks it might be even better.

2. Amazing how easy and quick they have been able to write and record new music. I think it's more than obvious just how much Tom was holding the band back and the way they recorded Neighborhoods and DED and without outside help just didn't work.

3. I do wonder what this means for the future of Alkaline Trio. It doesn't seem like Matt is going to have much time to write and record and tour (outside of a few shows here and there) for a while. Not sure if making the deluxe album will stop blink from putting out a new album in 2018 like they planned but if they do I don't see how Matt can realistically be able to do both. Maybe Trio will put out an album during his short down time and do a short US tour for a month or so.

 

I think Alkaline Trio can co-exist for now. Depending on how active and often Blink wants to do things it may reach a head eventually. Most of 2017 is free for Alkaline to be active. The Dan tour at the beginning of the year is a little bit curious, but there is still a lot of time for them to create and play shows. The new Dan tour makes it appear the communication may not be as consistent as we thought it was between the members. It feels like Dan didn't know what Matt would be doing to start 2017 so he locked in a tour to guarantee he had something going on.

 

Great interview, and very excited now about this deluxe album. Next year is already shaping up to be pretty great music wise.

 

Seems like blink will be playing some shows in January and possibly February and you'd have to think before their European tour they might play a few US dates as warm ups, which they have done in the past. I believe they are touring all of June and July overseas. So that probably just leaves the fall for Trio (I don't know what Dan or Derek's schedule for this year looks like just basing off of Matt) as I don't think they would have consistent free time to write and record until then.

It's hard to speculate about communication between the Trio members but it's entirely possible plans changed once California became a hit and the demand for blink is pretty high right now. Matt is making life changing money and having once in a lifetime experiences so I can't fault him for riding the blink train now.

I do wonder what would happen if Matt couldn't do both because it seems possible that there just won't be time to have two full time bands. I mean Tom is obviously not the best example but even he couldn't manage blink and AVA and while it seemed like his focus was always on AVA he completely stopped touring with them. If Alkaline Trio was my favorite band I'd absolutely be concerned.

 

Is Blink going to be doing more touring than has already been announced and listed on their site?

 

The article made it sound like it, especially playing the California album in full. And I was just speculating about a short US tour in May just based off of what they did in the past before they went off on a European tour.

 

If what you are saying is true, than that would definitely change the Trio landscape a bit. I know someone in the Trio thread talked to the drummer and what he disclosed is pretty different. This will be interesting to see how it plays out.

 

Yeah again I'm completely speculating here but wouldn't be surprised to see blink busy finished the deluxe album and doing spot shows/mini tour until the European tour ends.

 

Still hoping sometime in May and June Trio can get some stuff done. Maybe do all the writing and pre-pro and when blink's done in July, get right in the studio and bang it out. Still see no reason they can't get an album out by the end of the year. At any rate, sure Mark and Travis will make sure Trio gets their due time before they start a new blink album cycle.

I think it comes down to nobody expecting this kind of success. I seriously thought replacing Tom, they wouldn't play more than mid-size arenas from there on out lol. Really feels crazy they're stronger now than where they left off with Tom.

 

I'm more than just concerned about the Trio. I know Matt hasn't forgot about the Trio but it seems like he has. I just don't want it to get to the point where he starts letting down Dan, Derek and the Trio fans.

 

I'm excited again already. Give me those 14 new songs asap!

 

Yeah I agree I was shocked at the success they had, especially since they had been pretty irrelevant since 2004. Really it's such a crazy comeback for them and proves that the name brand of "blink-182" is stronger than any 1 individual member.

 

Matt is probably in an extremely tough spot. He's now in one of the biggest bands in the world and has never been a part of anything as successful before. It's not like he can tell Mark and Travis he needs time off to record Trio stuff or tour with them even if he wanted too.
