Insecure, Baskets and High Maintenance are at the top because those are my favorites from that list. If that helps narrow it down at all.

From what I've seen, good picks. I always enjoy Ehrlich's end of the year videos.

His videos are always great, even when there are some questionable choices. It is always a mystery why so much film criticism remains solely in the written word when you have the ability to convince people through visuals.

Sweet deal on Film Comment's subscription going on right now, you guys recommend the subscription?

Film Comment is the best regularly updated film periodical (Reverse Shot is too erratic). 20 dollars for a year is more than worth it.

I love their articles but wasn't sure cause I've had some sites be far better than the hard copy. Good to know, I'll be getting it cause that's a great deal.

I don't subscribe to it but if you're into reading their work/back catalog, go for it!

His argument is rooted in truth but his examples are dead wrong. Neither is Oscar bait by any standards. Collateral Beauty and Jackie are Oscar bait.

Jackson is right. The qualities of films caught up in these campaigns will be harder to see because of the hysteria, advertising, whisper campaigns, and attacks against cast and crew until the awards are given out.

For real. Anyone who calls Moonlight Oscar bait clearly hasn't watched the Oscars ever, but most specifically for the last two years.

And Manchester is only "Oscar bait" if by "Oscar bait" one means "a mind-blowingly great film that stands among the year's best" (same for Moonlight, too, really).

He very clearly did not call Manchester-by-the-Sea or Moonlight Oscar bait. He called the Will Smith movie Oscar bait. His point about the previous films is that people have very personal experiences with these films that look bizarre when they are thrown up as these universal things everyone has to see.

American Honey didn't even make Slant's top fifty. They were much more appreciative of her other work, too.

I showed parts of A Very Murray Christmas to my students today. A few became interested because of Bill Murray. Most people thought Paul Schaffer was Pitbull, mostly because I make fun of Pitbull a lot in class.
