Good performance, but nothing endearing about it.

ever since IV it's been very very fun imo

the hit detection and how characters reacted to it was state of the art. basically the next big industry jump since Half Life 2 for that kind of stuff and physics. shoot someone in the leg and they go down and maybe shoot you while they lay down or roll down stairs.

I do think it's particularly great - it covers race, capitalism, corruption. Both in the story and the side missions as well. This isn't downplaying what happened to said character, but that review I linked sums up my thoughts pretty nicely (pushing aside the hate towards AC Syndicate - everyone knows I love that game). And I don't see many other games let alone franchises (in fact - Assassin's Creed Syndicate pushed socialism and anti-imperalism pretty hard and in your face. I know I'm pushing a ubi series again, but if someone could show me another major franchise that focuses so obviously and consistently on these themes, let me know) that discuss these things, let alone discussing them well.

Yes I edited my post RE: stealth and gunplay, but I think that could be a very long discussion haha. I'm not sure how much of it is hypocritical - I find that to be a political argument to have, in a sense. I know in the gaming sense alone, players appreciate choice - so if people wanted to blow stuff up then they could. I mean, it is a video game, and I have a feeling some people would have preferred going the "guns blazing" route. Talking about character, cast, and purpose and intentions...I definitely believe that's a whole other debate.

I disagree, I think the cars do feel different, and I don't think there's anything particularly jarring or bad about the stealth.

I haven't played Mafia 3, MGSV, or DR4, so I cannot comment on those games.

I never said nor implied it was OK? Not sure where that's coming from. Just that it was obvious the character was not going to be a major part of the story or short lived from the lack of inclusion in marketing. It's how said character's death was handled that was bad, but moreso the aftermath and lack of explanation than its actual happening. We knew the character was out of the hackerspace because of their job, so something was going to go wrong. But why were Ded Sec targeted in this particular moment and why by this particular group? And why not talk about the character after their death? That's what bothers me.

That's fair. I don't think it's bad, it was fine, but I never thought it was spectacular. It never detracted from the games and I still love them. It might be that I just am not as into 3rd person shooting because I did have more fun with it once 1st person mode was added.

Steven Ogg seems like a terribly nice guy and he's a great actor, which is too bad because I loathe everything Trevor represents about the gaming industry and don't buy his justification of satire

Watch Dogs 2 doesn't have anything especially poignant or unique to say about those themes. Besides, you can't exactly point to WD 2 as a game that discusses race in meaningful ways, when one of its POC characters is treated so poorly.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on the subject of cars then, ha. There's nothing bad about the stealth, but there's nothing that great about it either. It's decent enough I guess, but that's about it.

It doesn't seem like this game is holding up very well for most people:

It does, actually. But you said you haven't finished the game so you haven't come across certain conversations, as well as certain side missions. Again, I said what I did multiple times about that character's death and how I didn't like how it was handled. I don't disagree. But while they're in the game, the mission you have with said character is a vital part of what I'm talking about.

Yeah the numbers don't really mean anything to me. I didn't expect this to sell well or hold up, when so many people didn't like the first one that much. Black Flag (I know not everyone likes naval combat, whatever) was 10x better than AC3, but its sales numbers were really low. WD1 was marketed and hyped pretty heavily and turned out to be a disappointment for most people. Same thing happened with Syndicate. Unity was awful. Syndicate was 10x better - didn't do so well though because of Unity. But even one of the guys at Game Informer thinks Syndicate is the best since Brotherhood (which I totally agree with).

Also I think people underestimate how ignorant or problematic many gamers are. Look at the comments on that site you just linked, it's being called "hipster garbage" simply because of its aesthetic (more colorful open world, younger and more diverse cast, set in San Francisco, etc). And there have been plenty of comments on YouTube I've seen along the lines of, "Why do I have to play as a black man" and "SJW agenda".

Do you mean the Nudle mission? I fail to see anything about race in that mission which stands out as unique or poignant. By videogame standards, then yeah sure, it's okay. It didn't blow me away and leave me in deep thought for the rest of the afternoon tho. When compared to other art forms that have covered similar themes, there is nothing spectacular about WD 2. It's a step in the right direction that such themes are even being included in a videogame at all I guess, but I still think we need to demand more from videogame developers in this regard. This was never really the argument I was making in my original post though, I was specifically talking about the gameplay.

My point is that it speaks volumes about the quality of the game. People just aren't sticking with it. I don't think Watch Dogs is a phenomenon in the same way Assassin's Creed was/is and I can't see it having much of a future.

Warms my heart watching my nephew massacre nazis in Wolfenstein.

Skyrim remastered has eaten up more of my time than i'd like to admit. Never completely happy about my choice when I choose a side in the civil war. I really hate the aldemeri dominion, and like for all people to be as free as possible, but a united empire has a better chance of destroying those smug, self satisfied, racist, fuckhead elves. the choice is made somewhat easier knowing that a certain person is a turncoat, agent provocateur, I guess.
