I do what I can to listen to as much different stuff as possible, but it still doesn't generally end up at the top of my EOTY list because I usually find I have to get way more into the genre to appreciate particular albums more, which takes time

Sounds like me on Fridays. I try to post all the new Metal releases that Tate's post lacks... I don't do it every week because it mostly goes unnoticed.

Same. I feel like my list is mostly just Metal, pop punk and a few indie or hip hop releases. I listened to plenty of singer-songwriters, electronic and hip hop although most of it just doesn't appeal to me so my list reflects more of the genres I'm predisposed to enjoy.

My top 10 is probably albums that made me feel the most at the moment or that I somehow went back to the most (which aren't always the same albums) and the rest is random stuff I liked. It's not necessarily a judgement regarding "quality".

Top 20-30 is always about emotional impact. After that it's just stuff I liked a lot

Yep, same. My EOTY list has way different proportions of genres than the list of stuff I listened to, though I'm hoping it'll balance out more as the years go on

    music is all we got

I think I'm finally ready to commit to this order. This is the stuff that managed to both hit me hard emotionally, sound great musically, and keep me interested and engaged through re-listens. There were a bunch of albums I enjoyed this year that were either kinda cheesy that I just like 'cause they're fun (With Confidence, Settle Your Scores) or stuff that was genuinely good that I didn't spend much time with (Bastille, Against Me!) that could have made the list, but I tried to be honest about the stuff that actually got me stoked on music this year.

P.S. Everyone needs to listen to that Glacier Veins EP. I'll shut up now.

Precisely why I like it so much! Hardcore is definitely not my genre of choice but something about what that band is doing is really working for me.

Yes! Maybe I missed it in other posts but I feel like nobody talked about this! This is such a good EP. For all the love that Noah Gundersen gets on this site, I'm surprised at how overlooked Young in the City is.

    Favorite moment on the EP:

    "Young dumb, full of some
    Animal instinct I guess
Your so pretty, your so pretty
Get the hell out of that dress
    And get stoned, real stoned
    Bring your body to bed

Let me give a whole new meaning
    To getting inside your head."

Did you listen to Spotlights new album Tidals? Female-fronted atmospheric metal kind of music. They opened up for Deftones this past summer. I only listened to the album once and thought it was pretty good. I've been meaning to go back to it.

can't be made fun of Prestigious

    1. Jeff Rosenstock - WORRY.
    2. Touche Amore - Stage Four
    3. Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker
    4. The Hotelier - Goodness
    5. Brian Fallon - Painkillers
    6. Apologies, i have none - Pharmacie
    7. The So So Glos - Kamikaze
    8. Descendents - Hypercaffium Spazzinate
    9. Joyce Manor - Cody
    10. The Naked and Famous - Simple Forms

Having less and less time to listen to stuff while keeping up with TV/games/podcasts between work and school and life, but those top four are some of the most powerful pieces of music I've experienced in adulthood.

    - Rosenstock's record is a masterclass in verbalizing the problems that the average person encounters in today's climate, while also sympathizing for the racially charged bullshit that others have to go through. There hasn't been a day since release where I haven't listened to it front-to-back at least twice, and if I had to rank my favorite records of all time, this would be in that top ten as well.

-Touche Amore hit me like a freight train as someone who lost my mother to cancer at a young age and who currently struggles with depression and anxiety. I was on my way to Rite-Aid on my break at work when I first tapped play and heard Flowers & You, and it is the only time music had caused me to cry in public. A beautiful portrait of the various stages of grief.

    - Cohen has been someone that I only came to appreciate after learning that the Menzingers' Sun Hotel 2 was more-or-less a cover of a Cohen track. I learned that just over two years ago, and have been steadily working backwards through his catalog finding a lot I love and a lot I don't care for, which only speaks to the man's willingness to go down which ever avenue he desired. When the single came out, I was floored. The message was clear and haunting, this was his swan song. The record itself is a dark hallway with many doors into a life well-lived. I bugged my girlfriend to listen to the thing every other day since the record released, and I had a day off from work when I heard the news of his passing. Talk about going out on top.

I'm also aware of the lack of women and people of color: truth be told, many of my favorite artists didn't have proper studio releases this year, and my schedule has left little room for discovery. I've beaten the new Run the Jewels single to death, for example. There'd be more representation if I went with a longer list or did an honorable mentions, which I may do down the line.
