Ranking is just someone being too lazy or stupid, probably lazy in this case, to use real words so they just use a symbol. It's bottom of the barrel for forum posts. It's the "the weather is nice today" small talk of an in person conversation.

This attitude has been present since the AP.net days, and I still thoroughly disagree. People CAN use ranking lazily, but it can also be a decent shorthand for opinions that can lead to discussion about those opinions. I have experienced good conversation from ranking enough times that these sweeping generalizations of rankings will always have zero merit to me, regardless of how many counterexamples can be brought out.

If you don't care for them, cool. Whatever. Not everyone likes the same types of conversation. But, like, don't pretend you have this enlightened view on their inherent worthlessness.

I'm more excited for GOTG2 than Episode VIII but I'm more excited for Episode VIII than John Wick 2 and I'm more excited for all three of those than I am for Kingsman 2. I'm excited for all four though.

Would this have been better? Don't want to come across as lazy or stupid on the internet.

I'm just saying if all I wanted to do was rank the films in terms of how excited I was, it's not about being too lazy to use words, that's just the best way to express that. Now I can see how that's not the most interesting or useful post but neither is "Fuck ranking. I am looking forward to all of those.", ha. Not every post has to be great. Sometimes small talk is fine.

Thanks for not ranking anything in this post.

Are EOTY lists bad, too? Just wondering.

Nah, man. Calling out pointless ranking posts is always worth it. If you don't like it, feel free to put me on ignore. It's an amazing feature.

You generally actually use your words. You may make incredibly sharp left turns at times that I find insane, but I can follow how you get there with your usual posts. You can't really do that with rankings.

I never read them. But if they go in depth of why, that's fine and has merit. If it's just a list? Massive waste of time. Without at the very least a small blurb, what's the point? A list conveys nothing of the emotion and love you genuinely have for those albums. A list does nothing to ignite interest in a non listener. It's hollow and trite at that point.

    Fuck rankings.

Wait a minute... I feel like we've been here before.

I don't want to put you, or anyone, on ignore. You of course have the right to do what you want, I'm just defending my own dumb posts, ha. I'm a big advocate of ranking so I'm always down to speak for it.

I like throwing rankings out there at times as an invitation to discuss, haha. Sometimes I get conversations, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I just get ridiculed for my opinion which is fine too.

Why is it worthwhile to call out an innocent type of conversation that you personally find pointless? How is that productive? How does that bring more good to the forums than simply allowing a very common starting point for conversation to exist?

At least you're consistent. You're wrong, but you're consistent, and you know what you do and don't enjoy, and that's cool. I just wish you'd let other people enjoy what they enjoy, unless there's a legit ethical reason to have a problem.

i think the only people I have on ignore is some tool who thought posting a picture of 2 random books without any context at all was somehow an amazing post and was totally self explanatory , psst (it wasn't), and that may be it.

I would say explaining WHY you are more excited would start conversations way more often. That's something that can actually be discussed. Know what I mean? Otherwise it's just like above "just switch X and y" type posts, which are kinda sad.

I don't think I've ever even considered blocking anyone. I'd probably feel bad, haha.

Definitely a good idea and I'll try and add some context or explanation to my rankings in the future. B-)

I thought I was going to love that film and I just ended up annoyed at the main character.

This would be more effective if it wasn't shutting down my attempt at enjoyment. But since it is, it falls pretty damn flat.

Through ranking posts, I've come to learn that @SpyKi has very different opinions on Anberlin's music. We've had some conversations about that before (usually with me defending DITWLIAP to no avail, lol). That conversation started with ranking posts.

Also, after seeing Doctor Strange, I asked my friends to rank next year's comic book films in terms of excitement. Those rankings led to conversation that lasted hours. There was discussion on the "why"s, but it started with the IRL version of ranking posts.

(For the record, mine was GOTG vol. 2 > Logan > Wonder Woman > SM: Homecoming > Thor: Ragnarok > Justice League. All but 2 people put JL at the bottom, and the other two still put it in the bottom half. I have good friends.)

It's actually great because they add CONTEXT to the movie. The movie isn't just John Cusack saying lists with nothing else. That would be the ultimate garage.

This somehow doesn't surprise me. Haha

I don't like The Walking Dead at all, but when I see people talking about it, I don't call people out for taking the conversation in a direction that I get not pleasure out of. And, that's IRL, which is more awkward. In a forum, you can easily ignore those posts (without putting the people doing it on ignore) and do your own thing. It doesn't inhibit your life at all, unless your life is inhibited by any time people do things you don't like, which would suck.

I stopped reading half way through. It's honestly hilarious how offended you are at a post that had nothing to do with you. If you like rankings, keep doing it. I can't stop you. But I will continue pointing at their shittiness when it applies.
