the whole time he was just mean mugging the bassist as if the drum part he's playing should get the bassist to turn around but he just won't, haha.

I keep wondering where they go from here, and if this is a sound they can explore further. If not, I hope they try out some of their blown out proggier elements from LA laced with the pop elements of this and LOSE. I think it'd be an interesting combo.

know everyone says joe's voice is great now and i guess i agree but oh man the times when he used his midrange w/o yelling were good times

would do anything to hear those songs live

Lenses is the best they've sounded imo (best just means favorite here). Also I feel like his vocals are and have always been good, but idk that I would say they're better than they used to be. He sounds like he's struggling on some of the newer songs, at least to me. Wish is like the first one that comes to mind. LOSE doesn't really give me that vibe though, but that could be because he doesn't really slide into his lower register on that one and in fact punctuates things with his higher register and falsetto more often on LOSE. Don't know if he'd begun consciously changing his style by then

My favorite vocal performance of Joe's is WTAM, probably.

I get cool Modest Mouse/Cap'n Jazz vibes from his vocals on that also WTAM grew on me immensely since the last time I talked about it
still my least favorite, but it's my least favorite out of four excellent albums!

That's probably why I love his vocals on it so much, the whole album just feels like part of the 90s indie rock "canon" or whatever. I love albums that capture that spirit; kinda like that Sioux Falls record that came out this year.

WTAM's production is probably my favorite production on any album. agree w Audrey about Joe's vocal performance, though his vocals on Lenses were also really excellent

starting LOSE I start to not like his voice as much. he took vocal lessons and might be a technically better singer but he lost a lot of the tone and delivery that made the first two records special imo

Even though LOSE is my overall fav (if I liked the second half of WTAM as much as the first that'd probably beat it), I can agree that I like his voice more on the first two records. I think his melodies are mostly stronger on the the newer material, though.

I agree, the vibe of it being a sort of spiritual successor is further compounded by me not being able to tell what the fuck those guitars are even doing half the time. Still gotta get around to that album, I've had it bought foreeeever

Same here with the 'haven't listened since it came out'. I liked what I heard and I love this band, but Pretty Years didn't grab me like LOSE did when I first heard it. My gf has Pretty Years on vinyl. I should sit with it again

They're playing a one off show at Webster Hall on 12/30. I'd love to go, but trying to get a place to stay in NYC on NYE weekend? No thanks.
