maybe a weird comp but I got 1975 vibes from True Colors

I'm sure that just comes from them both mining similar 80s influences tho

Particularly the pre-chorus. That use of like call and response between the rhythmic group vocals (better when we're both apart) and the soloist (we're no good for each other) is straight out of the MJ / Quincy Jones playbook.

The bridge to Versace on the Floor also does that MJ-ism really well

The lo mein line sounds like it was ghost written by childish gambino

I like his lyrics for the most part but honestly I focus more on his melodies and production than his lyrics. But he's definitely got that lyrical edge to him, even if he writes about the same things over and over he does it so well and makes it so interesting that I don't care.

i used to like his lyrics back in the trilogy days but even those arent that great and pretty much everything since then has been pretty eh lyrics with some of it being quite terrible (see: kiss land).

this is mostly where I'm at. His appeal to me has never been lyrical really either.

Probably one of the best I've heard this year, quality from beginning to end. Hot take here but I can see this being his Thriller, that album that establishes him as a true megastar and becomes a classic years from now.

I'm personally not that big on the kendrick verse on sidewalks...

I feel like Kendrick just does not bring his A game to features, like he rhymes a lot and has a good flow obviously but compared to the stuff on his albums they all just kind of feel like fill in the blank kdot verses. I'm sure he just saves all the idea he loves for his own stuff but damn... just wish he would go hard on features too, especially on that song!

the best part of the song is the daniel wilson part, what a voice.

Maybe it's the length, but not loving this album on first album. Could definitely grow over multiple listens but first run through there's a lot of blending together

I'll write you into all of my songs Supporter

Albums too long, but around 3/4 of this can be involved in discussions of his best material.

I love this so much. The Lana Del Rey song surprises me (in the best kinda way) every time I hear it.

I can't stop comparing him to a modern MJ. Which a month ago before this album was released I would have totally ridiculed anyone who said that, but this album is really great. It's weird to read some of the negative reviews. It's like I'm not even listening to the same album as some of these critics.
