That one song they have about the crafty crow stealing the succulent goosberry pie from the wicked fox or some other hideously awful twee shit might be the most irritating and horrendously undeserved self-satisfied set of lyrics I can recall.

I'm in no way familiar with their discography, but from what I've heard, their lyrics are atrocious and the delivery is even worse. That one song above is so bad, I feel comfortable blacklisting them for life because of it.

 

That's a pretty narrow viewpoint of their lyrics and music tbh

 

I think that song is fantastic lyrically but it doesn't even come close to the best stuff they've written and is one of the worst representations of them I can think of. I think Aaron Weiss is one of the best lyricists ever honestly. I've certainly never been as impressed by anyone else.

 

I feel like posting some of their best lyrics now but I'd probably end up just writing up like half of their discography.

 

I like his lyrics but don't like his voice.

I like their lyrics but can totally see how someone would feel the way George does about them, no doubt.

 

You understand someone writing them off for good based on one song off their worst album? You're better than that

 

I understand feeling that way about the lyrics of that song. And while I'd very rarely form an opinion about a band off one song, do you think that if you despise his style in that song, you're likely to enjoy other stuff he does? I don't particularly. Dude's style is pretty distinctive, which is, of course, something fans love about him.

 

His style is nothing like what he does in that song or album though. At all. You know as well as I do that album sticks out like a sore thumb in their discography

Utterly unrelated, but did you enjoy Impermanence? I was just listening for the first time and it occurred to me "Jake would prob LOVE this a few years ago".

Deer Leap. Somewhat in that neo-emo thing but a little more clean and sparkly like 5 years ago Moving Mountains or something.

I feel like a lot of people were on them with that split and then kinda didn't bother to keep up. Which is a shame because they've grown pretty awesomely

To be honest, I was being deliberately hyperbolic and OTT, because, well this is the unpopular opinion thread, may as well go all in.

I do think that one song is absolutely horrendous (I relistened a few minutes ago, LOATHE it), but I have heard a few other MWY songs and maybe even a full album once upon a time. Nothing I've heard has been anywhere close to interesting, and I definitely do not have the faintest appreciation for his lyrics, but nothing has been as ear-gougingly bad as that one song either.

The Fox, The Crow and The Cookie is amazing, what the shits. It's adorable and charming in its twee-ness.

Gonna go listen to that song on repeat for 2 straight days now.

I had the same thing although I only came on board with Ten Stories.

 

I don't think the stuff he wrote on the first three albums or even their last is anything like that song other than having some clever word play.

 

I like mewithoutYou pretty much ONLY for their lyrics *shrug*
