I want to get my thoughts out to you guys before my class, so if I have any additional thoughts as I get more plays through I'll throw them up.

@KennedyBN I really like your acoustic take on the song. I wish your vocals had been more up in the mix because I was really enamored with them. You sound like early Koji.

@Barcara @nothingsforeverdude You did a fantastic job merging the two songs together. I couldn't tell where one ended and the other began. The harmonies were absolutely on point!

@bradsonemanband Brad, your creativity never ceases to amaze me. fantastic job! I don't think I'll ever be confident enough to do a blind cover.

@teebs41 I was so psyched when you went hard with the vocals. I was screaming in my car hahaha. The little guitar riff right before the hard vocals stole my attention as well. I don't know if that is in the original song, but I loved it.

@bobsheiskawy Housebroken is one of my favorite Hotelier songs. The original makes me feel super sad (in a good way) and your cover made me feel exactly the same (in a good way haha). Your musicality carried the original song's vibe perfectly.

@aoftbsten Your voice made me like Sun which I previously was very "meh" on. I've been switching between your cover and the original all day. Your cover made me think of Alcoa.

@elemenohpe I entirely forgot that this song and EP existed. Which is super funny because when I heard summer discomfort the first time I was like, "Wow this band must really like Brand New." and I thought that exact thought again. hahaha Great cover though! The vocals were awesome! I started car moshing while eating my lunch.

@InfiniteArms The piano was a great alternative to guitar! It carried a different feeling that went well with the "I'm coming for you" lines. I got shivers!

@jols The main riff. Ahhh. It made me so happy! You sounded like Christian! The group vocals were fantastic! (Did you do them by yourself or have friends help out?)

@nothingsforeverdude Already said it, but damn, you always do a phenomenal job. You know your style and play it so so soo well.

I'm really glad that you like the choice of strings. I ended up making that pick on the fly because I couldn't find a good way to emulate group vocals. It was also getting late (11:00 pm) and I was certain that my neighbors were gonna call the cops if I kept screaming in my attic. hahaha

Haha, well it definitely worked to your favor! I know the feeling about being to loud for neighbors when recording vocals. I had to leave my apartment to do some of the louder vocals because the walls are way too thin in my building.

Thanks man! Makes me happy that you're revisiting "Sun", it's on of my personal favorites on "Goodness". Also, I had never listened to Alcoa before, but I just checked them out. I can't believe I've never heard them before and I'm really liking them, so thanks for introducing me to these guys.

@KennedyBN i can't seem to remember if you've contributed to one of these before but i'm really glad you did this one and hope you do more in the future. i really love your voice. it's v expressive and i think it is really neat that you manage to get the same despair that christian gets across through frenetic vocal delivery via restraint instead. also excellent guitarwork

@bradsonemanband neat idea! blind covers are always interesting, i think this one is an interesting interpretation of the lyrics and also would make a catchy pop punk song in its own right

@teebs41 greatly appreciate your strumming pattern choice bc that's one of the things i don't like about the original lol. (also noticing that the chords sound a bit like cute w/o the e? maybe it's just me though) your deep rest already feels a bit like a fall song but i think your cover highlights that aspect of it even more so. it feels stark and lonely in a way befitting the song. nice job.

@elemenohpe impressed with how spot on this is w the original & even more so that you learned all the instruments (and recorded them!) in a single day. props.

@nothingsforeverdude been quietly obsessed with this song for a couple years now. i had the idea in my head for a while but the execution was super rushed and although i'm really happy with the first minute or so there are a lot of things i would change about the rest. enjoyed the process though (altho not so much the late nighter) and felt like i got closer w one of my favorite songs and noticed things i wouldn't have otherwise.

@aoftbsten the last time i was this impressed with a cover was when this happened. love when different interpretations of songs capture certain emotional resonances that are not always obvious in the original version. like "sun" is a very warm, seemingly open song, but it also carries with it a sense of cyclical passage of time and shared experience. i think you built on that really neatly. your version feels very communal & cyclical and your chords (?) were really chosen. also props on those sick ass harmonies/group vocals :-----)

@bobsheiskawy me & this song have a history of not getting along but it makes more musical sense as an acoustic song. nice job on arranging + mixing. also nice to have a version w/o that really silly key change at the end

@InfiniteArms ooooh piano. your arrangement is a bit reminiscent of newer mountain goats, in a good way. also think i speak for everyone when i say we appreciate you putting this comp together & putting up with various hassles along the way :--)

@jols among the wildflowers makes a good closer. am somewhat surprised but not really but how well a lot of the home songs work acoustically. really enjoy the multiple vocals/harmonies on the explosive moments ("carefully crafted commercial disaster" onwards) in the first half and the way the song ends with the suspenseful restraint

@Ugly Mug this is undoubtedly the first cover of introduction out there to actually play the guitar correctly lol. nice job. all the instruments are spot on (guess i wouldn't know since i don't play them, but they sound pretty spot on to me) and you actually nailed the high parts at the end which is p impressive

@Barcara i like the way you interpreted these songs and having them merged feels very complete. also really enjoyed getting to sing w/ you through the magical powers of the internet, thank u : -)

Thanks! That "A Sunday" cover is so well done, I'm not sure my cover comes close, but I appreciate it nonetheless. The chords are mostly rooted in the chords played in the actual song, but with more notes left open and the different strumming pattern. I'm really bad with chord names so these might not be close, but it's essentially variations on C9, D9, Em7 in the verse B, A, G for the chorus, and then C9, Em7, and A (Asus?). Basically what's tabbed below but a little more loose & free with the high strings.
    e ------------------------------------
    b -------------------3-3-3----3-3-3-3
    g -0-0---------------0-0-4----0-2-0-0
    d -4-2-0---------------2-2----2-0----
    a -5-3-2----5-4-2----3-3-3----2-0-2-3
    E -----0----7-5-3-------------0-------

Your cover of "Discomfort Revisited" is so good. That was one of the first Hotelier songs that really resonated with me, you did a great job with it. Substituting the lead guitars with piano sounds great, that combined with the softer vocals pushes the quiet heartbreak underneath that song front and center, in good way of course.

Ha thanks! I used a palm muted C sharp minor 9 chord which uses the first three notes of the cute without the e chord, good ear! Thanks for the kind words

Doing this compilation I can only respect @bradsonemanband more than I already do for putting all the past ones together. Now I know the schematics of it all, hopefully Brad will allow me to continue to assist him, but I am also happy to relinquish all the control he empowered me with so he can go back to being our beloved Music Dad.

Everyone did such a great job on their cover with their different styles, different feels and in my case, fucking up lyrics but making it work anyway!

Thank you everyone, you were all a pleasure to work with, and I can only encourage you all to move further with whatever creative energy you have flowing.

  19. Thanks for all your help with this, Damien! If I ever need some help again, you'll definitely be the first one I hollaaaaa at.

Manchester orchestra for the next one? Seems weird they haven't been done yet, given how big they are on here. But there are other bands that are big on here that haven't been done yet either I suppose.

Do the comps still get posted to the front page? I realize you can't submit news anymore (kind of a bummer but good for quality control I suppose)
