Does it have to make the initial case though? It’s Nintendo, people are going to take notice in April when they reveal everything with the price and release date. It’s not about a new gimmick this time. It’s about making a sequel console as the same step up that Xbox and PS do each generation. Why fuck with a masterpiece design when you can just make a direct successor? Would Prime 4 really show me what the console could really do in 20 seconds of clips? This is just them saying “hey yeah it exists, you can stop now. See you in April for the full thing.” They wouldn’t shadow drop a teaser on YouTube if this announcement was their linchpin for proving their upgrade case.

Why would anyone expect anything wild after the Wii U bombed and the Switch is a pretty perfect hybrid (technological limitations aside) I mean probably expect a Switch 3 as well, sorry if it's "boring" lol

More or less my thoughts. It is the games that matter.

“If it’s not broken, don’t fix it”. This is exactly what I wanted: A stronger, bigger Switch that keeps the hybrid design and still plays Switch 1 games.

We absolutely won't see a Switch 3. That's not happening.

    1) It’s Nintendo, they’re gonna have a stellar lineup I think

    2) Uh, the Switch Oled doesn’t run a whole library of games that the OG Switch doesn’t run?

If the Switch 2 does really well there will be a Switch 3, only maybe it’ll have a different name (but Sony has kinda demonstrated that the most boring way works best, whereas Nintendo and Microsoft have recently stumbled because of naming conventions)

I would argue that Nintendo is so unlike their competitors that we should expect them to be using the Switch 2 as a stopgap between the Switch and their new innovations. They are very much a creative toy company that likes to pair their games to the specifics of the consoles they're designing. I think doing the Switch 2 after the sales of the Switch gives them much more wiggle room then they did from the Wii to the Wii U.

They're learning from their mistakes and I bet you their next console will be quite different.

I think it will depend on how well the Switch 2 will be doing tbh. Nintendo actually really only rocks the boat when things feel like they aren’t working anymore. The Wii was a result of the GCN not competing, the DS was a result of the GBA not coming close to being the Game Boy etc.

I for one cannot wait for the Switch 2 is a failure takes because people disregard that there isn’t a global pandemic that pushes it towards becoming the best selling console of all time for a the second time in a row

Booster Course Pass was a blast and worked well as a Mario Kart 8-and-a-Half, but man I'm excited to see what mechanics they bring in for a brand new iteration. I hope the speculation about there being 24 racers is correct because that will be bonkers, if so.

i agree that the form factor for the Switch 2 should stay as is. Nintendo caught lightning in a bottle with the OG model, and it only makes sense to improve upon that with its successor. it doesn't need a gimmick to succeed. my criticism has to do with the fact that almost every other console reveal of theirs has focused on some sort of key selling point distinguishing what makes the console different than its predecessor, be it its hardware, form factor, game lineup, or core functionality. if the key selling point this time is that it's a higher-powered Switch, they should not only point that out in the reveal trailer (especially for the average consumer who isn't gonna tune in to a 45 minute long presentation on its capabilities), but maybe give a couple brief examples of some of these technological improvements (i.e. show off a stylized comparison of the same game running on both versions of the console, potentially one that's more resource-intensive than Mario Kart).

we all know on paper that the Switch 2 will be more powerful, but this trailer doesn't really express that or say anything other than that it's larger, backwards compatible, and will likely launch with Mario Kart 9. i know they're saving more information for the April direct, and i'm looking forward to seeing what they reveal, but i don't know if i'm 100% sold on spending $400 on an upgrade just yet based on this 2 minute reveal trailer alone (and i'm sure other casual gamers who own the first Switch probably feel similarly). Sony and Microsoft fill their consumers and shareholders in on their consoles' technical improvements during their reveal events/trailers, so it's weird to see Nintendo not do that this time around. again, i want to be excited about it, and i probably will be in a couple months, but i'm just not there yet (that or i'm impatient, lol).

i will say that it'd be badass if the console has a solid third-party lineup of games i've been wanting to play/finish for a while but haven't because i didn't have a system that could run them. i played bits and pieces of Cyberpunk and Death Stranding over NVIDIA GeForce Now back in the day, but i'd absolutely be down to play a scaled-down version of them on the Switch 2. hell, give me Respawn's Jedi series and it'd be a day 1 purchase.

But again, that’s what April is for me. This teaser isn’t to reel you in and sell you on it. It’s just to get the existence officially out there. Like the tweet I shared mentioned that it’s so third parties can start announcing games. They showed Mario Kart because it’s their biggest hit and that alone will sell the consoles, if it’s a Switch 2 exclusive, which why wouldn’t it be?. The general audience wouldn’t even know what Metroid Prime 4 to care that it has PS4 graphics in less than 20 seconds of footage. I didn’t mean that a general audience is gonna tune into the Direct. But they will see the new trailer Nintendo will release with all the details, launch games, and release details. They don’t have to sell you on it now. That’s what the months after April are for and why we don’t have pre-orders yet.

i mean this is true, but i'm assuming that a good number of new titles (mostly third-party) will run on both the Switch and Switch 2 for a little while given how many OG models have sold/continue to sell (aside from bonafide console exclusives). if that's the case, then the technical upgrades would have to be different enough to make it feel like a major step up (and maybe they will be!).
