One of my friend's bands sold candles which was a fun idea but also what if they smell like shit and I feel like a merch item that destroys itself isn't ideal

 

Like one of those huge gas station / truck stop combo stores in the middle of nowhere off the highway

 

If I went on tour I'd bring a mall Santa with me so people can take their picture with him

 

thats the good move, stickers are such a low overhead and what you get out from them is def worth it. i try to stay tapped in to different sites and vendors whenever they run sales i just stock up on our stickers. i used to use stickermule before he got all weird lol but there are plenty of alternatives. easy way to connect with peeps if they only have money to get in for the gig

When I'm on the road I have a hard time resisting an Arby's beef n cheddar so we'll need to make sure to have lots of car fresheners to rub on me before we go into the venue

As far as pay being sketchy I haven’t really had that issue too badly so far. If the venue barely paid us it was because people barely showed up, and I liked that the local bands at times had class and knew we needed the $30 they made more then they did. I do that too if I’m supporting touring acts and the show doesn’t draw as well as I hoped, but it’s not EXPECTED cause the locals did still put labor and money into the show.

but I actually work with a booking agent now and we put our heads together and do a lot of research on venues, like we will message bands who just played there and ask them what kind of experience they had and what that venues payment structure is like, etc. it really pays off to have someone in your corner your trust helping you book the shows. he has experience from booking other bands so he has a much better idea than I do, which venues to avoid and which venues actually hook you up.
