In theory this is true

in practice most the drummers who think they are Abe Cunningham are actually the ones who lack the nuance to understand how to even BE Abe Cunningham so I generally don’t trust any drummer who’s anti click track lol.

Even if you accept the necessity of a click in the studio, if you never practice to a click you are gonna suck at playing to a click when it IS time to record. It’s also nearly impossible to do any looping or backing tracks without at least the drummer having a click, and if the band doesn’t even practice to a click sometimes it’s also likely that band will rush or drag songs live - which in some genres isn’t a big deal, but in other genres can really mess with the vocalist’s ability to hold notes or articulate syllables precisely.

I don’t think bands that aren’t professional and aren’t looping NEED IEMs and a click track, so much as they should just practice to a click sometimes to build up “muscle memory” for staying in time even across rhythmically difficult transitions. But when we get up to the level of a professional band with a production budget and their own techs. Then it’s like why NOT use IEMs and a click and be extremely tight haha

you don’t gotta explain it to me man, I understand why some use clicks and why others don’t haha. Personally, I’ve never not recorded to a click alongside a scratch track
