i liked this okay (35mm didn’t hurt) but i’m gonna call this eggers’ worst. i don’t think the larger scale shit yields best to his abilities as a filmmaker. but i’m open to seeing this again in case my opinion of it strengthens

That is a tossup between The Queen is Dead and Strangeways, Here We Come. Girlfriend in a Coma was my introduction to their music so I have some bias.

Thank you for your reply. Ties in your lists are your only fault as a poster.

The vvitch is my least favorite of his. This is probably second with the light house at one and the remaining film the northman coming in third.

I had the correct ranking the first time. Not sure why everyone else is adding their incorrect ranking.

I was trying to mix up how we do rankings. Make it a bit more fun.

    Ok

The first 30 min specifically when Thomas is traveling (by himself!?) to meet with Count was incredible. Some of the coolest shots I’ve seen in recent horror. The whole village outside the castle was 10/10 and reminded me of Resident Evil 4 lol. The shot of him alone at night approaching the main road? Great. The black horse drawn carriage that brought him to Count? Great.

That first shot we see Count was very subtle yet now knowing how feeble he was makes it perfect.

What was Count pouring him? Seems like a port kinda guy but since it’s near Germany maybe a mold wine.

The way he would bite the main victims chest and not their throat still kinda freaks me out.

The performances. The performances in this movie were a delight. Dafoe, Depp, and Count’s familiar were the standouts. I honesty loved ATJ and was surprised to see him venture into madness so effortlessly when thinking about some of the criticisms I saw of his acting. He did a great job I thought. Dafoe smoking on his multiple pipes, and asking ATJ for shnaps? Great. The familiar was so unhinged and devoted to his cause I felt it in my bones. When we see him first absolutely losing it about the count coming and his plans in action it reminded me so much of of the recent season of Fargo with the main villain.

LRD was incredible. It’s been a while since I’ve seen an actor use their body so violently to such effect. That scene with her and Hoult where she’s absolutely convulsing with passion and then they have sex was 10/10.

Thinking about it now the rats were a great addition to the story. When we first meet the Count and he loses his shit about Thomas mentioning the villagers antics we hear what sounds like bats in the background. Now knowing how the rats were involved I’m sure it was them.

What drove ATJ to go to his wife's tomb? He was in the horse carriage with the gang, plotting their trip to the manor, and then later ATJ dips from his place and visits his wife's tomb, lifting her up and kissing her (if I remember right?), and then dying. All that kind of confused me as well

He succumbed to the plague and obviously was devastated over the loss of his whole family.

That whole part stuck out to me. Just very sad and tragic. He played it great I thought.

I guess the plague drove him so mad, that he wasn't troubled by the action of un-tombing his wife and making out with her
