I read a lot of his short fiction in college, and the translation of his short stories that I liked best is I think out of print, it’s by Norman Thomas Giovanni. I noticed that other translations of stories like The Gospel According to Mark didn’t hit me the same haunting way in other translations. Andrew Hurley’s translation of Brodie’s Report is adequate, and can make for interesting comparisons of translations for Borges’ short stories. I also have a collection, Ficciones, published by Grove Press that I liked, though I’ve wanted to seek alternate translations to compare.

For longer fiction, something like Labyrinths, I have the New Directions version and have only read that, so while I can’t compare it to other translations (like Giovanni’s translation, which I think is out of print) I still got a lot out of it. Whatever translation, Borges is worth reading. I love his work.

 

This is awesome thank you! Most of what I've read has been by Hurley. As soon as I get paid again I'll be hunting down the Norman Thomas Giovanni translations.
