Read the whole book and it was definitely eye opening! Can't believe how much of a disconnect there was between Steve o and Cone both turning against deryck. It seems like they could barely stand each other through most of their success. Underclass hero part was intriguing, that album just never got the right push despite all the massive hits on it. Its a shame people don't know about it.

As for the ending, is this really it for the band ? Also, it said Steve o finally apologized, but doesn't seem like they are on good terms ?

It basically just said that deryck thought Steve o and cone were using him to make all the money, they never really cared about his health issues.

it reminded me of the avicii documentary, like it's hard to stop the success train once it starts rolling while also handling personal friendships and relationships along the way, when money gets involved and a lot of it, it definitely can complicate things. i mean deryck even admitted to hating stevo on initially meeting him but then eventually they became inseparable so there's that underlying feeling of dislike from the the beginning towards him.

Cone turned on Deryck, too? Must’ve worked stuff out eventually.

Basically they just wanted deryck to do all the work and they make money off of him. He wrote all parts of every song and all the instrument parts is how I understood it!

Wow so which albums were the other members not coming up with their own stuff? All of them? Haha

Deryck was the credited songwriter of the band. Not sure if that ever changed over the years. But that doesn’t mean he wrote every part.

he said he would write the song to a full fleshed out demo, and only sometimes one of the other members would switch something up but most likely the song would be finished already from him. thats why it bummed him out after dave left and everyone was trashing the band online, he was like i wrote most of the solos and riffs, dave just recorded them. he said dave got better as a guitarist as the band went on but wasnt the shredder he is known as in the beginning. like kids saw him play the solo in the in too deep video but deryck wrote and recorded that solo.

Interesting, yeah I can imagine that would be discouraging. Deryck is pretty dang talented.

Man I need to get around to this book, I didn't realize he'd be talking about the inner workings of the band so openly

They just cancelled their final Australian tour. I had tickets to see them 2 more times, but looks like I won't get the chance.

Bummed. Gutted. Heartbroken. This band changed my life and I'm so sad to see them go. Glad I got to see them on their last round here a few years ago, and a few times before that. Just sad I don't get a "farewell".

I would definitely be disappointed. But given his past health issues, gotta be super cautious and take the time to recover.

For sure. His health first. Last thing I want is him to power through a show unwell and not enjoy it and struggle.

I'm feeling better now. They're an amazing band and I know cancelling would've sucked massively for them. Sucks of course, but hey, saw them a few times and the memories I have of them will never change.

I was a big fan through Chuck but didn’t listen to anything after Chuck (not sure why I fell off). Did a discog run through this week and I was surprised how much I enjoyed Underclass Hero. 13 voices was the only one that sounded a little “paint by numbers”. Thoroughly enjoyed the rest

You think there is any chance this band returns after this tour ?

I do think if Deryck ended up doing a solo record it probably wouldn't be too far off from Sum 41 unless he really took a left turn, it sounds like he basically single-handedly composed the music for this band anyway and he's been pretty outspoken about not liking any genres except for rock lol

  23. I can see a solo record leaning a bit more on the glam or garage rock influences that popped up here and there. More piano centric stuff as well

I finished the book a few weeks back and almost posted in the Sum thread after cause I was super sour on Stevo and disappointed to hear how much of a shitty narcissist he sounded like. Was also bummed to hear Cone being pretty uncool for a little bit but they’ve mended fences and he wasn’t anywhere nearly as bad as Stevo allegedly was..

There’s often two sides of a story but idk I’m inclined to believe Deryck here since he came across as pretty transparent with his own shortcomings throughout the book.

Great book and definitely recommend if anyone was curious but just be prepared to hear some wild shit.

Also and more importantly: fuck Greig Nori!

Haven't read Deryck's book, nor am I a huge Sum 41 fan, but members of a band having issues is pretty typical.
Also, Deryck's alcoholism probably made him hard to work with and be around. Planning to read his book soon and see how he addresses those times.
