Another thing I never thought about with the playoff is how it gets rid of a ton of bowl berths for certain conferences. Saw BYU and Colorado are playing a bowl game against each other. Don’t think I’ve seen two teams from the same conference in a bowl (outside of the Natty) before.

 

Now we can focus on Hunter for heisman

 

They have to. All of the conferences are essentially consolidated. Conference tie ins are dead.

With nil and the portal these bowl games become as meaningless as ever if that was possible

Bowl games should be moved from the post season to week 1. That's your week 1 opponent.

But what about teams that didn't qualify for a bowl?

Bowl games aren't necessary and lose a ton of value with the CFP but I still like having them for the sake of having them

I won't be surprised if they go away at any point but I like them

 

Ain’t about that at all and no one has ever pretended it was.

Some of these bowls come with a weeklong vacation, tons of free swag, trips to nearby theme parks if the Florida ones, etc. All of that shit is cool and the kids deserve it. Have fun with it. These kids give up a lot of the college experience to play sports (which isn’t to say sports don’t give them a lot of things that the rest of the college students don’t get either). Seems pretty lame to take that away from the 70 other teams who get to celebrate their season.

Hell, going to bowl games is how I became a fan as a kid because I was raised so far from Knoxville. The bowls have been around longer than everyone posting in this thread. As much as college football modernizes, college football is also one of the most grounded in tradition thing we have in sports.

 

Main reason I want bowl games to stay, if it makes me boomerish so be it

 

Tradition is what kept athletes unpaid. Keeping something that isn’t good for traditions sake doesn’t make sense. The bowls don’t mean anything of consequence, schools lose hundreds of thousands from already unprofitable athletic departments, to go to a bowl game in Arkansas to play half hearted to avoid injury. The bowl game structure needed changing 20 years ago, there were too many. That is even more visible now.

 

The longevity of them, especially the “big 4” is also one of my favorite things about the sport. They might not mean as much or the same thing as they used to but there is something romantic(?) about at least the upper tier ones.

 

There are 36 bowl games outside of the playoffs. I think it’s fine if we cut those lol. Nearly that means 84 of the 134 teams get a postseason game, why stop at 60% of all teams, why not include them all?

I wonder if that attendance includes all staff and players the way that WWE fudges attendance numbers

 

I don’t mind bowl games at all. They are absolutely harmless and I love watching random matchups during my vacation on the last week of the year. I don’t get why people are complaining, nobody is forcing you to watch these games. I don’t care if it’s all backups. It’s a cool experience for the kids, many of which aren’t getting the huge NIL bag.

I like the making bowls a week 0 game but I also think the bowl games all need to be destination "fun sites". The state of Alabama doesn't need 4 bowl games. Frisco doesn't need a bowl. I get that you want more "warm sites" but i like having the games at fenway and Yankees stadium.

Id definitely put a bowl in Lambeu field. Wrigley. Put a bowl in Austin. Definitely more international sites...Ireland, Puerto Rico, UK.

 

I’d miss them a lot as junk TV for the end of December, but we’re past the point that I care about any single outcome in a non-playoff bowl game
