Sure, happy to admit that. And if they said “we’re trying to make a splash by filling multiple holes” I’d be game. But they’re putting all their eggs in the Soto bucket and then when they strike out there, will make a bunch of minor moves and say “welp we tried.”

I think they land a big pitcher, I really think that’s the play. We just don’t hear as much on that front due to the nature of the Soto sweepstakes

Like I’m just really not convinced they’re interested in being anything more than “might sneak into a wildcard spot and get hot at the right time” team.

If they pay big for a top of the line starting pitcher, either in money or in prospects, I’ll shut up. I feel like they’re so horny for the “this guy was a cy young candidate 4 years ago, does that work?” Guy.

They have been for sure, I think their younger players like Duran/Abreu/Rafaela all panning out is helping them recognize they can fill out more now in the established market though and the fact that this season they had good pitching that didn’t sustain because they didn’t fill in depth like they should’ve sent a loud message. Giolito was a weak pickup for sure but the other players did well while healthy and getting someone like Fried or Burnes (the preferred option) turns that team around pretty immediately I feel

I’m just still not sold on Soto being what moves the needle for the Red Sox and makes them THAT team they need to be to win. He’s exciting and Yankees tears are delicious so I’m not against it for them, I just think there’s better targets and like the idea of Burns+Hernandez a lot more

I personally don’t really care about Soto. I mean, sure, gimme one of the best players in Boston 81 games a year. What I care about more than anything is an actual earnest attempt to compete for a World Series. I’m happy with whatever that looks. But I do not take them at face value that they’re trying, so it kinda needs to be proven. If they wanna say “last few years we were resetting after a World Series run, and now we have a good young core we can build around” fine, do that then. But mediocre 81-81 profit generating team is not exciting to me.

It’s just been sooooo few years since the last WS win, I really don’t get it haha

I do think you just liked that team a lot and hate that they moved on from it (which is fair cuz the Mookie trade was ass)

It was really more pairing “where moving away from Xander and Mookie etc etc etc and adopting the Tampa Bay Rays methodology” that just left such a bad taste.

Like I know how spoiled I’ve been as a sports fan, so I’m not gonna freak out if they go a couple years without a World Series or whatever. I just want it to remain the focus of the organization. Not “how do we fill the ballpark on the cheapest budget possible.” Which is what they pivoted to.

I don't think that's fair to the Rays who do not aim to fill their ballpark

The Lester debacle was far worse than Mookie. He wanted to be in Boston long term and was ready and willing to sign an extension and then they low balled him after he helped them win a WS. Even after that he still wanted to stay, it was only until after they traded him that he realized maybe playing for another team wasn’t so bad.

The Red Sox literally told Soto their plan this offseason was to sign him and then get two top SPers either by FA or trades.

That I would consider trying. Let’s see if they’re willing to actually do what it takes though lol

I completely understand if any Sox fan is skeptical about the team/front office until they actually go out and sign/trade for players and field a contending team. Outside of 2021 they haven’t done that since 2018. Hopefully they prove the doubters wrong.

I think all of this is a moot point because no cap etc etc, there’s no excuse to not spend. But if I squint and try to look at it from a different POV, they’re trying to line up any big contracts with the prospect readiness, since two guys are MLB-ready right now (Anthony, Campbell) with Mayer and Teel not too far behind. I think it’s more likely that’s the case rather than hitting 15 years of success and deciding to turn into the Pittsburgh Pirates

BUT like Dave said the onus is on the team to prove otherwise and it’s gonna be a lot fuckin harder to walk back this offseason’s comments than it was last year
