The Free Syrian Army faction (the one based in southeast Syria and Is backed and trained by the US military) has made an their own offensive. As of today they took the ancient central city of Palmyra, and are now closer to Damascus' northern flank than Julani's forces are.

Between them and the similar US backed Southern Front group coming from the south, the more "moderate" US backed rebels might take Damascus first and beat HTS and the Turkish backed rebels from the north to the punch.
