It feels better to like things and talk about how much you enjoy things than to hate things and talk about how much you dislike them.

Edit: This isn't a commentary on anything happening here, this is a separate thought.

Hating stuff is usually more fun. It is always enjoyable when a movie like 3 Billboards or Green Book unites the entire group.

I absolutely do not agree that hating is usually more fun. On average, by default, it’s obviously more satisfying to enjoy a thing, and it’s corny to me to feel otherwise.

However, there is absolutely joy in venting the frustrations created by a thing that sucks to you in a certain way, or in diving into a critique in a way that’s generative to conversation. Those joys often outweigh thinking something is “pretty good” in a middle-of-the-road way.

I also find it silly sometimes when someone says it’s “better to enjoy things” when there’s a critique, as if the person chose not to like a thing. Like, I clearly had a better experience with the newest Halsey album than a lot of people, but I don’t think people who don’t like it just need to choose to like things better, lol (even if some of the critiques miss hard got me).

Plenty of stuff is fun to hate but it’s always way more fulfilling and joyful to love something

    Some art deserves hate/ridicule

I love my moments as a hater, but the joy of loving something is just more fulfilling for me personally.

I don’t regret my time talking shit on that JLo music video movie though. That thing was nuts

I also prefer loving and liking the art I love and like. But I’m anti-“let people enjoy things”/unexamined consumption

Yeah, this is where I stand as well. I think sometimes we lose the line between critique and just being assholes. Plenty of things call for it, but sometimes I just see things that feel unnecessarily rude

I generally don't trust people who seem to like everything. On the other hand, if someone hates most things but then heavily praises something else, it is probably worth looking at.

That’s pretty reasonable. Although most of the people in my life like that choose the weirdest things to throw their love behind. I know someone who has nothing nice to say about Marvel movies but practically has PowerPoints ready to go about Justice League. Wild

This is where I stand. Criticism is fine and good, but I think some people don't articulate their thoughts beyond "this sucks" and "this is the worst", which isn't really something you can engage with.

Like, i'm sorry, but Wicked the musical sucks. I took the moms last year and we all agreed....terrible plot that makes no sense, lame, bad character development... the first half is semi interesting but the 2nd half is brutally bad storywise.

The only redeeming quality is the theatrical pageantry of Broadway....so like....why would the movie version be better?
