I think I’ve decided on my next car

2020 or 2021 Subaru Outback Touring XT

I looked into a lotttt of cars and that’s just the best one for what I need. They have one under 50k miles for $21k in Alexandria. Get a Black Friday deal on the APR in there and we might have ourselves a winner.

 

My criteria:
1) is roomy for music gear, at least 20 cubic feet of storage
2) want at least 30 mpg highway
3) want at least 220 HP (250 in a big car) and a 0-60 of 7 seconds or less so I don’t get bullied on the highway
4) want a good trim with upgraded speakers cause my car is my “listen to music” temple… and interior that isn’t cheap plastic
5) less than 60,000 miles
6) less than $25,000
7) from a reliable company… fuck Kia, Hyundai, Ford, GMC, etc

extras this fulfills
8) excellent all-wheel drive for winter tours - I’m planning to go on this January tour in my new car so uh, I kinda need that to make sure I avoid an accident in my brand new car lol
9) Tows 3500 pounds if the band gets bigger and starts bringing a trailer
10) not super annoying about safety features like most new cars are
11) being able to sleep in it with the seats folded down is a plus, options for nature trips with Cait and for short solo weekenders or two-piece tours with Jared (drummer) only

the only criteria this doesn’t meet is being under 185 inches long, parking it is gonna suck and a lot of spots that are there for some cars won’t be doable for me… but tbh I’ll trade that for towing and all wheel drive.

The only other car that hit this many of my “wants” without being a luxury brand was the Volkswagen Golf R but those used are easily $10k more expensive than the top-trim 2021 Outbacks tend to go. That would be a more fun-to-drive option and the way easier-to-park option for SURE, I’ve rented one and those things are surprisingly quick and great at braking and cornering. But the Subie is just way more practical for tour - even though I COULD load a drum kit and amps into a Golf, and even though it also has excellent AWD… I can’t tow shit, or sleep in it, and that back seat is not very roomy for long drives if we bring a bassist. Maybe if my credit was excellent I could justify a $30k car but the payments would be too high cause my credit’s decent but not great.

 

The new 2025 Civic Hybrid Touring (hatchback version) was also on the table, love that 50 mpg and the 25 cubic feet trunk / 179 inches overall length combo rules, but the lack of 4WD and the fact that the absolute best deal I can get on it is probably still $29k, has me leaning Subaru

 

Damn too bad the playoffs are on the weekends

@Randall Mentzos not trying to yuck your yum but those vehicles you mentioned seem like they may end up being more expensive than you’d think man lol

Like my wife and I make more than you together obviously and our payments are $425/$450 plus insurance

 

And we put $5500 down on one of those

 

yeah i just went through this process and those numbers, for what you want, don’t really seem reasonable. i would say don’t be afraid to go used and if you look in the 2019/2020 range you might be able to make it work

 

I’m looking at a 2021 Subaru Outback with 42,000 miles that’s pretty close to what Randall’s describing. 22k and change. $0 down, 10% APR and 84 month loan brings it to $370. Not awful.

 

oh i missed randall saying he was looking at a 2020/2021, just saw him mentioning the 2025 honda and that he was writing off kia/hyundai. yeah. that doesn’t seem unreasonable.

my favorite/longest tenured car I ever had was a 2008 Chevy HHR that had a rebuilt title and I think 120k miles when I got it in 2013, paid maybe $5k and drove it for 6.5 years/about 90k more miles before I got rid of it

 

Loving my Rav 4 Hybrid for the MPG; but unfortunately they dont exist in the used car world.

 

Oh yeah, a 2025 Honda would not be happening. I tried lol.

We got a used Nissan Rogue for like 20,500 or something like that with less than 50k miles and it’s suited us really well so far.

Honestly of all the kinda cars that can justify a 30k price tag, I’d say a Honda is it. Those things retain value like a motherfucker.
