can't imagine this tbh. I am a fairly socially codependent person but I also definitely need time apart from the people I love here and there. Ive learned that I prefer a relationship where we take time away occasionally.

not that I don't miss them easily - when Cait goes home I'm always like "ok but when can we plan for you to come back :)" haha. But then I realize in our time apart that I actually needed that time to like, run personal errands or focus on band shit, or sometimes just rest and do nothing and not be needed by anyone for a day lol. And we definitely have less disagreements about little stuff when we take time away, helps keep things in perspective and remember that just cause we love each other doesn't mean we don't operate differently and have different needs. It's a lot easier for her to be at peace with the little things I do that can be annoying to her and vice versa when we give each other space regularly. I think us both being autistic has something to do with that though.

 

that said I can see how having kids REQUIRES couples to be more codependent on each other and plan their routines in lockstep with each other, and over time how people get used to living like that and then it feels wrong / off to be alone for more than a few hours

 

Guitar tone SO important, definitely a huge part of Terrain's sound lately. I'm very satisfied so far with how my album doesn't just sound like a Tele it distinctly sounds like ME playing a Tele. First time I've ever felt like I have a "signature" guitar sound.

It's mostly all the same tone, just augmented with different effects in different places - but the reason I like to use Class A, EL84 tube amps is because they're soooo responsive to how you play. The same settings can be dirty and aggressive if played hard with a slight push from an overdrive pedal or like, sparkly clean if played with touch and with a slight scoop of the mids on an EQ pedal. You're not only hearing my pedals and amp, 40-50% of the tone is my right hand technique and alternating hard and soft in specific places / angling the pick weird for certain notes, to "accent" the tone in certain parts of the riff.

I'm also using two amps at once with different effects on each - so basically every effect i use, delay / reverb / tremolo / overdrive, has one amp that's "wet" and one amp with a dry (no effects) signal. So you'll hear the delay / reverb / what have you but it also won't clutter up the original notes. It came out REALLY well in the studio, so well that i'm not gonna have to double track half as much as i thought, a lot of the time just the one stereo track sounds plenty thick

oh i definitely think i’ve had my own “tone” that sounds like me for a while. i just meant it never really occurred to me to go direct-in vs. using an amp or a modeler. even though it’s been done trillions of times since the beatles lol. i’m still gonna use the amp a tone though, i’ll probably do the ty segall trick where you triple track guitars and have amped guitars hardpanned and double tracked but then a direct-in track in the middle that’s lower in the mix
