The funniest dumbshit policy the Trump people want to do that nobody is really talking about is them wanting to build multiple American NEOMs on federal land out in the middle nowhere western plains.

Every similar project out there like this the last 5 years from SA, to Egypt, to Indonesia has been a financial black hole and a waste of time, work, and money.

I did a binge of Young Indiana Jones on Disney+ awhile back. There was an episode where Indy helps a certain young radical Vietnamese waiter in 1919 Paris gain an audience with the French government to advocate for the conditions of the people in colonial Indochina. It blew my mind.

Is there a good resource you guys have seen that talks about post-pandemic fascism/eugenics in history? It wasn’t something I’d considered until a few days ago and sort of blew my mind

 

I got absolutely chewed up in the politics thread, I think my senior year of high school? I said that someone should have to be born in America to be president (I was a fucking dumbass). People jumped down my throat and it led me to a lot of self reflection about politics. Kinda sad how vivid my memory of this is lol. I really cared and respected what people in this community thought.

Completely anecdotal but interesting: I ask my students (juniors) to write about the best and worst part of their weeks every Friday. A few wrote “Trump got elected” but I was saw more “I’m happy we got Tuesday off.” The kids don’t seem to be feeling the existential dread that a lot of liberals are rn.

The claims that the democrats abandoned the working class and should have better embraced economic populism certainly has truth to it, but I do think it's worth pointing out that the Biden Admin/dems were actually quite effective in that regard in the beginning of the presidency. Build Back Better was popular among voters, the American Rescue Plan, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and the Inflation Reduction Act did a lot of good things that a lot of people probably don't even realize and are still doing good things today. The short term memories of voters definitely don't remember any of that though

Harris from what I remember did not spend much time at all talking about those accomplishments and the things that it did to help people, so she could have taken the route of boasting those things while emphasizing the need to expand on those and go bigger and bolder under her admin. Maybe touting those things while people still struggle economically would be a hard sell for them to believe they actually were good things, but gotta believe it would have been better than just her vagueness of "I wouldn't change anything except put a republican in my cabinet"
