I was 12 when Congo came out and I remember I had read the book and was super excited because they really hyped up how this was 'from the people who brought you Jurassic Park' and even as a kid I remember being like what the fuck is this shit

Article mentions that Lucious was Maximus’ “secret son” - what? Never heard of this before. I asked ChatGPT and it said

“In the film Gladiator, Lucius is not the son of Maximus. Lucius is the son of Lucilla, who is the sister of Commodus and the daughter of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Although Lucilla and Maximus were romantically involved in the past, they parted ways when Lucilla married another man and Maximus married his own wife.

Lucius’s father is never identified in the movie, but he is implied to be from a different family, unrelated to Maximus. Lucius, however, admires Maximus and seems drawn to him, which might hint at Lucilla’s lingering feelings for Maximus. This connection contributes to the tension between Maximus and Commodus, as Commodus is jealous of both Maximus’s bond with Lucilla and Lucius’s admiration for him.”

Barry Keoghan was set to play a villain in the film and dropped out. What happened?

Yeah. Barry got locked into “Saltburn.” I think that’s maybe the best film I’ve seen this year. Anyway, Barry is one of the good ones, the same level as Joaquin Phoenix and Paul. Barry is so complex and actually has it under control. I know he’s a bit of a challenge, but it’s worth it. Like deciding on Joaquin, it’s worth it.”

That's not the first time I've seen that mentioned. Pretty sure it was even in an interview Paul did. But I was also confused and assumed they were kinda just making it a thing in this one.

i liked this enough. hits plenty of notes of the original, but i wasn’t surprised or really bothered by that. and from a craft standpoint, it’s definitely remarkable. but it’s held back by a lackluster script imo. could’ve really benefitted from more of an emotional heft. also unsurprising is how magnetic denzel is, who stands out with ease. thought mescal was pretty solid too. worth and a-list watch if you have nearly three hours (including trailers) to soare
