Was thinking about this today some. And about how it plays into the whole thing we talked about about the young male demo and what happened to it. And while we know first hand how toxic a lot of those communities were, it did also let people get pushed back on, a lot of my early education came from them. Thinking one thing and saying it and getting yelled at and learning. I dunno, there’s a part of me thinking about the obvious toxicities and that age group and how something along the way clearly didn’t work when now we have people just re-adopting the R word? Had this election result in this demo. Can see these weird certain hobbies to right wing influencer pipelines being built all over. Part of me thinks we’re not meeting any of these people where they are. Instead we’re telling them where they can’t be or shouldn’t be, often at an age where they’re basically predispositioned to rebel and go against the grain and say fuck authority and that (pardon the word) coolness is now Joe Rogan and this string of absolute losers that weave young people an enticing web: we’re anti authority, we will let you be you, they’re gonna police you, come over here. It’s a ground the punk in me knows well.

that and how much my feelings in 2016 were sadness, went into immediate deep deep deep depression, and fear … and my feelings today are almost all defined by an anger because this all felt so knowable, avoidable, and we watched the car with no brakes go off the road and then looked around and are saying “yeah, that fucker had no brakes and there was turn up ahead.”

At least here, everyone got REALLY into being a real estate agent during COVID (mostly through vaguely MLM-ish agencies like EXP) and they all campaign hard against it.

 

It’s wild to see because I was on video game forums when I was a teenager and it was mostly harmless, today gaming as a hobby has been completely taken over by anti-woke grifters that have poisoned any source of discourse surrounding the industry and anyone getting into it is immediately courted by the absolute worst people you can imagine. You can’t fucking find a community out there that doesn’t have a significant amount of people uncritically parroting far right sentiment. I am extremely afraid of where the industry is heading culturally and materially given the historic lay offs it’s seen so far this year and in 2023. Unfortunately it’s impossible to talk about working conditions and exploitation without someone saying “go woke go broke.” I don’t even know how to make any progress with this. There’s a lot of studios out there that have had very left wing themes in their games and it has only recently become a huge deal anytime it happens. We are just so lost. And it seems like whats happening in video games is happening in almost every other hobby out there. The main voices people are exposed to express right wing sentiment unchallenged. Young impressionable people lap it up. The well is poisoned for anyone to the left of the vocal minority so they stop engaging with the community.

 

@dylan I really appreciate your posts in here about things we can do in our communities. I’ve had it on my mind all day and the thought that there are actionable things that at the very least can make things somewhat better locally is what’s kept me from just doomscrolling off the earth and given me actual direction. yeah I’m not prescribing the young men being lost thing as a reason she lost but of a palpable shift in the culture and what that means as kids that are currently 12-17 years old reach voting age under another Trump administration, when they were too young to really remember the first one

 

yes but I do think it would take an accessible (political) education that explains to young men correctly why things do in fact suck.

 

I absolutely believe the whole thing is fucked because the whole system is a mess and no one is actually going to do anything about it. If Kamala was a decent human being she would have come out on stage and said this is fucked up and unconscionable and they were going to do everything in their power to check into election interference.
