Idk if someone says I hope ships implementing a blockade sink and you take that to mean they’re wishing death personally on your family you might be making it personal when it’s not

 

The military definitely preys on the poor and advertises the job as helping people but at some point if you’re pointing guns at people who live an ocean away from your country who have done nothing to you or if you’re on a ship blocking food and medicine from getting to starving people you need to walk away or you’re complicit. but most military jobs don’t come near this stuff and it is just government work.

My whole family aside from me joined the military. Both brothers were deployed multiple times. The truth is they were in way less danger than the people they were sent over there to slaughter

Yeah I've known quite a few that ever since 9/11 got out because they didn't feel comfortable with what was going on when being deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan. But you're right, most never even come close to setting boots on the ground in these zones.

 

i think its productive to self critique the way we look at the military even if it involves our families, perhaps especially in this case.

You all seem to think their reaction means that they aren't or can't "consider people on the receiving end of US foreign policy as people" simply because they're saying hearing or reading someone saying they hope US military members die bothers them due to having family in that position. "I don't like hearing that you hope a US navy ship gets sunk because my brother is in the Navy and it's possible he could be on said ship and die" is like, a perfectly natural way to think and it doesn't mean you're any less upset for the victims of the US military actions too lol. Sometimes I feel like I'm taking crazy pills because I feel like this happens hear and elsewhere a lot, like...are we seriously having trouble understanding that?? I don't think it's a very complex thing but maybe I'm wrong?

i think, actually i know what i said is that a us ship blockading Lebanon (mind you this in the context of a US supported genocide) getting sunk would be cool, and what i think happened is a guy with brothers in the navy got upset at me, cause he has brothers in the navy.
