I probably should have read All In before reading Absolute Batman & Wonder Woman. ABatman was fine, it’s Snyder doing Snyder things I guess. AWonder Woman though was great! Fantastic set up and great writing.

in other DC news, Ram V’s Detective Comics was so damn good and Taylor’s first issue was pretty good. Zdarsky announced his Batman run is finishing soon and then dropped the best issue of his run which is unfortunate.

Tini Howard is finally off Catwoman and Harley Quinn so I’m hoping back into them, Grønbekk’s Catwoman was really really good and Harley was so-so.

Feels like a lot of Marvel writers are moving over to DC the last couple of months. Like Ewing, Deniz Camp, Grønbekk. Wonder if they’re going to be exclusive, Camp would be a big loss for Marvel imo. Ewing too of course.

  4. i haven't read any Tini Howard but i didn't know anyone disliked her?

I just don’t vibe with her writing. Her Captain Britain stuff was her best. She’s overly wordy and crams too much writing into every page. But yeah it’s just not for me.

Pretty confident Deniz Camp isn’t going exclusive any time soon. Seems like he’s got a bunch more Ultimates to do. So fucking excited for his Absolute Martian Manhunter, though, with Javier Rodríguez, the best modern cape comic artist as far as I’m concerned.

DC in general is just clearly doing better by creators than Marvel right now. I’ve had a pull list for just over a decade, and I’m about to have more DC than Marvel for the first time ever. If DC got rid of the handful of mediocre men on their core books (King, Taylor, Williamson, Adams, etc.), they’d be unstoppable, lol.

Oh, and for non-cape shit, I tried Minor Arcana in spite of having never gotten that into Jeff Lemire and really loved the first two issues. Love that it’s supposed to be a long series, too, which doesn’t happen nearly enough with non-superhero books in the direct market these days.

Yeah I thought DC had a light year up until a couple of months back, and they still focus a bit too much on Williamson and Snyder for my tastes. But now they seem to be firing on all cylinders. V’s New Gods, Batgirl, Metamorpho, Two-Face, and maaaybe JSA are upcoming #1’s I’m looking forward to.

616 is just in a rut imo, not loving the X books and Spider-Man is in dire straits. I like(d) McKay’s corner but his Avengers is just ok for me. I dislike the most recent Miles books which sucks. It just got derailed by Gang War and then Blood Hunt and hasn’t picked back up I couldn’t even tell you anything else at the moment as it all just feels a bit stale outside of the Ultimate Universe which is like a breath of fresh air.

Didn’t love the first issue but I’m going to revisit it after the first arc ends.

In other non cape-shit recs I highly recommend Nights by Wyatt Kennedy and Black Cloak by Kelly Thompson.

The Power Fantasy is cool too for non cape-shit cape-shit

For Marvel ongoings, I currently just have Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men, and Exceptional X-Men. Oh, and Spencer Ackerman’s Iron Man launched this week, which I dug and plan to follow for now.

Ultimates I chose to trade wait, but I’m seriously considering changing my mind and catching up, lol; that new Hawkeye is so cool. I also went to trade-waiting ASM, which was a bummer (this Tombstone finale looks so fucking cool), but that series is way too expensive to read in floppies, lol. Speaking of bummers, hate how badly Immortal Thor dropped off for me. Don’t understand why Marvel let the art be so inconsistent on that one.

I am following Black Cloak, thought I’m bad at remembering all the lore, lol. Also following The Power Fantasy, but I count that as a cape book, in spite of also being a reaction to them to some degree. Real good so far!

Speaking of Image books, I really hope part of Zdarsky stepping down from Batman is a commitment to Public Domain long term. Any time I get an issue written and drawn by Chip, it brings me joy.

Also speaking of Image, you reading The Deviant? What a fucking brilliant limited series that is.

That’s wild! Jeff Lemire may be my favorite creator working depending on the day.

It’s not necessarily that I was ever against Lemire, y’know? But, for whatever reason, idk, it hasn’t been right-place-right-time to me to get into his work. All I’ve read previously is an arc of Black Hammer and an arc of Old Man Logan, lol. And, maybe a couple other loose ends?

Probably doesn’t help that I got more actively into comics after Sweet Tooth ended, and he’s so prolific that I was like, idk… don’t know which one I’d personally go with first. (Turns out launching a long form series about a melancholy and bitter lesbian inspired by Tarot and classic Vertigo in 2024 is exactly the right entry point for me, lol.)

Ultimates is really cool but I’ll be honest and say it probably reads better in trade than it does month to month.

Yeah I’d love Public Domain to keep going, have you read The Domain? Despite loving Public Domain I haven’t actually read any of that

The Deviant is Tynion’s Christmas book isn’t it? I haven’t, will probably read it at Christmas. I love pretty much everything Tynion does. The Nice House by the Sea is a great follow up to TNHOTL

Lemire’s horror books are so good. Gideon Falls, Little Monsters, and The Bone Orchard Mythos are great. Primordial is brilliant too.

I’ve basically been there with him from the start, which is Essex County. At this point, I’ve read most everything he’s done (except his Marvel work). I prefer when he writes / draws his own stuff. That’s why Minor Arcana is so exciting for me.

I have not read The Domain either. Cool idea, but I’ll wait to get that trade sometime down the road. Honestly kinda wish it’d come out in between arcs of Public Domain instead of simultaneously, lol.

Yeah, The Deviant is the Christmas one. Which the marketing made seem like it’d be a holiday slasher comic but like, it’s more about the horror of being queer in America. Really stunning work, imo. Just one issue left.

  21. took a bit of a break from reading but i finally finished vol 2 of Raven: Daughter of Darkness. pretty good, but the ending felt a little bit rushed.

oh, and yeah, the Zatanna and Hawkgirl runs i posted earlier were really fun as well. i haven't had the chance to visit my comics shop in the past few weeks so the latest Batgirl and Birds of Prey issues are still sitting there.
