i'll say this, while i feel some of that too, Dems absolutely need to do a better job reaching out to them. going forward, there's no reason not to.

terrifying thought in the back of my head: eight years of Trump followed by eight years of Pence.

Mastermonaco makes an extremely good point on keeping it 1600s newest podcast (came out yesterday). A lot of young voters may really not realize that being a woman is still enough to stop awful people from voting for you so you have to vote.

Trying to guilt people into voting for a warmongering wall street candidate probably wasn't the best strategy, but yeah keep the blame game up its really working well. And still, its not like Stein took an enormous amount of votes. Which is saying something-- I think plenty of leftists did swallow their pride and vote dem. But I don't blame the ones that didn't, however I've been saying that all along.

Maybe I misunderstood. I thought you were saying fuck the people who voted third party.

Honestly, most of it is determining how money is distributed to schools. But they also have a say in what standards are adopted. What scares me is if he decides to overturn Lemon v. Kurtzman (the decision that schools can not promote or inhibit religions in schools) or if he tries to add creationism into the standards (which would be, admittedly, hard to do). With the senate and supreme court, they can overturn many things that took years get passed. Also, I am terrified they are going to defund many special education programs. I will admit most of these are baseless assumptions because I don't like him that much but many evangelicals would love to see some of these changes.

As far as early indications go, this probably has a lot of truth to it, right? It seems last minute undecideds swung for Trump, and this seems like the biggest reason why. Its infuriating really.

I almost got someone to sub for my students today, but I decided to go in. The first thing I saw when I walked into work was a young white boy asking the lady behind our counter about the election.

He said he is not surprised he won, but that he thinks trump is mean and he doesn't understand why trump wants to hurt people. Idk who's student he is, or who his parents are, but if I had to hear anything about it I'm glad it was that.

Yeah. It's crazy how many people I've seen (not in this thread necessarily, mostly on Twitter and facebook) call for unity on the left and then turn around and say fuck Jill stein voters. Not much unity in that line of thought

i think so, at least. and determining how much of an impact it had is really, really important, to how the country interprets this election, to future elections, to Dems trying to perform the autopsy and determine roads forward.

While I am sure it contributed, it occurs to me that Clinton never addressed the underlying concerns that would allow the emails to grip the imaginations of people. More to the point, the establishment supported her, despite problems, that people conceptualize as being endemic to structural issues that have made their lives worse.

I fear that all blame will be laid at the feet of the emails, and they will effectively say that it wasn't a referendum on the last few administrations in administering policies that would have actually helped people.

Just so I have all known conflicts of interest accounted for, can @Jason Tate or anyone let me know if there are any others? Most of these were poached from a couple articles already posted in here, but reading this full run down of what we know so far is scary and explains a lot of his policy that has been briefly outlined.
    • His kids are to run all Trump Brand business in a blind trust (where much of his personal assets remain).
    • The same kids that will be eventually running his businesses are currently on his executive committee while still in the family business. All of this after Trump Jr. said they were not going to be involved with government.
    • Those businesses under the Trump Brand being run by his family will have power, water, and all other logistical/utility issues negotiated between lender and the family of the president.
    • Negotiating international business deals (construction, leases, etc.) for the family business under the name of the president. A president that is not separated from the business.
    • Trump is a shareholder for several international entities. A conflict of interest in that he said he wants to reduce the rate for repatriating cash into the US from overseas. This is important as overseas accounts are commonly used to avoid taxes.
    • The real estate project with Ziya Mammadov, who is accused of money laundering.
    • Russian investments with Sater & Bayrock
    • Trump's ties to Paul Manafort, who helped place Viktor Yanukovych as president in Ukraine. Viktor is now under investigation for corruption by Ukranian authority working with the FBI.
    • Personally, Trump has assets in Energy Transfer Partners. The same company that is involved with the North Dakota Access pipeline.
    • Trump owns stock in Bank of America. In part of his policy he said he wants to deregulate banks.
    • Trump has stock in Facebook
    • Deutsche Bank owes the Justice Depart about $14M from crises-related mortgage abuses. However, that money likely won't ever be imposed as Trump is one of their biggest borrowers.

the server was her and her people's mistake. i don't know that she could've adequately assuaged the publics concerns, given the media's incredibly clear desire to make it a story and the difficulty of explaining anything technology to the American public.

i have no problems criticizing Clinton on the server, while still recognizing that there appears to be a very real chance that she had the election won, until the FBI, at best, bungled it's handling of the case.

i'm fine with saying fuck Jill Stein tbh. if she was a person worth taking seriously, she would have worked with the Clinton campaign to get something in return for her support, recognizing the threat Trump presents. look at Bill Weld.

her supporters, i'm a little mad at (not blaming them for the loss), but yeah, that's not a path forward.

I guess I sort of look at it like this: the impact it had has relevance only insofar as the scandal structured a narrative that was already powerful. I think the trajectory many of us on the left now have shouldn't be sidetracked by that reality and the failures of Clinton more broadly. She was a terrible choice. Her decisions reflected that of the very elites that people are rejecting.

    For real:

"President Obama has just 71 days until Donald Trump is inaugurated as our next commander-in-chief. That means he has a matter of weeks to do one thing that could help prevent the United States from veering into fascism: declassifying anddismantling as much of the federal government’s unaccountable, secretive, mass surveillance state as he can — before Trump is the one running it."

President Obama Should Stop NSA Spying Before It's Too Late

I don't know why you'd expect Jill to want to work with Clinton. But, I said don't say fuck Jill Stein voters. You can have whatever view of her you want but if we're gonna talk about unity we need to not be hostile to the people who are on our side
