TIL: This year Hanukkah starts on Christmas Day and ends January 2nd.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen this happen before. Thought it was interesting!

 

As someone who grew up around Clearwater, FL (Scientology's equivalent to the Vatican/Meccah) I have known this one for awhile.

The one that blew my mind was learning that Michael Pena is a big Scieno.

 

TIL the two largest cymbal manufacturing companies in the world Zildjian and Sabian both are ran by the same extended family who have been making drum cymbals for 400 years

 

That blew my mind when I found out about this years back.

IIRC, there was some family drama which caused one of the Zildjians to leave the company and found Sabian. I don’t remember the full story

 

TIL: David Schwimmer (Ross from Friends) was originally tapped to play Agent J in the movie Men In Black, but he turned the role down due to commitments with a different project.

Absolutely wild. I can’t imagine anyone but Will Smith playing that role

 

TIL that in the classic film Airplane! David Letterman was originally cast to play Ted Striker and Christopher Lee was supposed to play the doctor.

 

TIL: Sen Dog from Cypress Hill and Dave Lombardo from Slayer went to the same high school together and were actually pals in high school too

 

TIL the concept in Hurricane prep of taping up your windows so if the glass shatters it does so in a few big chunks instead of in a thousand tiny pieces is now considered a myth and is strongly discouraged.

 

TIL: The pumpkin spice latte was actually created by Starbucks and was only introduced in 2003. Starbucks also owns the trademark to the initials “PSL.”

This is so weird to me. With how much of a phenomenon pumpkin spice is, I assumed PSLs had existed for a lot longer

 

TIL of two different (but similar) types of squash exist. One is named the “baked potato squash” and the other is named the “mashed potato squash.”

The baked potato squash, when fully cooked is tastes like a baked potato, while the mashed potato squash, when fully cooked tastes like mashed potato.

The other interesting thing is the baked potato squash is brown-colored and the mashed potato squash is white-colored

 

Update: I tried both of these squashes today. I disagree that it tastes like a potato. They both taste like a squash and maybe tastes closer to a sweet potato. But both squashes, when baked completely, spot-on have the texture of a baked/mashed potato. Totally soft. Super easy to scoop out and deal with. Will definitely eat again!

TIL that two versions of “Even Flow” by Pearl Jam exist. The original album version on Ten which was released as a single in the U.S. and a re-recorded version recorded in 1992 which was released as a single in the UK

 

I feel like I knew that in the back of my head but totally forgot that the rearviewmirror version was different than the OG Ten version. I spun the shit out of my Rearviewmirror CD as a kid and dont think I actually heard Ten in full until like the past decade or so.

 

I’m so used to the Ten version that I legit had no idea another version existed. Although I’ve heard a couple radio stations play a live version before

 

TIL: Some desktop tape dispensers are filled with sand in order to put weight on them.

I found out when the CEO of my company accidentally dropped one today and it broke lol

 

I feel like I haven't seen a sand tape dispenser in a while. I remember as a kid liking to shake them lol

 

TIL: my HVAC system has a feature that circulates the air periodically and helps balance the temps throughout the house. Would have been nice to know last year in the winter when the temperature difference between upstairs and downstairs was driving me insane. That's on me.

TIL: California almost split in half and became two separate states. NorCal being the actual “California” and SoCal taking the name “Colorado.” A bill was sent to Washington DC to approve the split, but it never went through
