That pocket of blue in the Southwest is a rare encouraging sight to see. Arizona was closer than usual, right? Maybe it can flip.

If I could just forget it

What if you need more doctors, nurses, mental health specialists? Do you compel someone to change their field of study? Just playing this out long term. You can acknowledge social conditions all day long but it doesn't change the fact that medical services are in limited supply.

I would like healthcare for all, I think it's paramount and I think we have the means to do it. I'm just not so sure on how to go about it.

  6. I have a variety of theories. One is that when the economic crisis in 2008 hit, Obama basically could have won no matter what his policies were. So, even though he was painted as a socialist, the fear and truth of the current Republican administration, and his message of hope, overrode those that tried to call him a Marxist even if they believed it. Another is that the idea of someone "fixing it" is appealing. Obama didn't use the same "let me save you" rhetoric that Trump did, but to some degrees he kind of was. And another involves an idea that a lot of people don't actually care about the actual policy ideas or know what they are or how they work, they just want the results they want. So they hear "this will be the result" and they try it. Doesn't work? Ok, on to the next guy that says "this will be the result." The reasons for it maybe not working are never even explained or examined. Does Obama's economic record get explained in nuance to anyone? Does it matter? Does it get explained where his policies got cut off at the knees by congress?

I feel we have a reactionary electorate and also a clearly large segment that is non-participatory. Both of those worry me.

cheaper/free college education would probably help with the demand issue

What about in 2012? Romney tried the same businessman-as-savior routine to no avail.

  9. Well, I'd take a lot of the money being spent in places I think is stupid and move it to healthcare so that the incentives to move into the profession remain. I actually don't even think it would be that expensive and can become cyclic with other policies (like the cost of college education).

the bush years were rough. hope and change worked and was delivered by a master orator.

  11. Got closer though. I dunno, I haven't looked over the maps from 2012 again to really look at that. Obama's 2012 campaign was also much less "redistribute" and progressive in those areas than his 2008 campaign.

I also do think the electorate is primed to give someone 8 years. It's one reason I really do think Trump will win again.

  12. Yep. And ... we're gonna have to do it again.

The majority of people are compelled to provide services or die. It is called having to be a worker. I wouldn't compel people to be doctors, however, there are ways to provide incentives and resources to expand the pool of people that have interests in medicine.

Wayne State University students are holding a protest march in Detroit tonight. Gonna go join them. I need this.

  16. Also, Warren or whoever is going to have a harder time running against Trump. Because people already accepted all the horrible things about him and it doesn't matter. You'll have to run directly against his record.

People better show up to vote. The anger in protesting I hope stays for four years and they'er all also be ready to turn out as well!

  18. Here's an interesting stat:

27,222 enrolled at Wayne State University. Trump won Michigan by 13,225 votes.

I'm so afraid of what is going to happen in Missouri. We're going to be Kansas 2.0 by this time next year. At least Gov. Nixon was able to veto some of the shit the legislator tried to pull. Now, like the federal government, it's going to be a far-right hellscape. I need to get the fuck out of this state ASAP.

There are a few possibilities: Trump's disastrous policies utterly demolish any chance of him being re-elected. The other is, Trump projects all his failures on to the Other, thus laying the groundwork for his re-election and a pogrom, the likes of which we have not seen since lynching was an American past-time. The other thing is, he may be the right's Jimmy Carter. But, either way, we cannot rely on facts to change people, as people have said. It is going to require a narrative and drive that can actually demonstrate how destructive his policies are.
