That’s unfortunate since she’s in the next two as well

It’s unfortunate that there’s a next two at all! I thought the male lead was way worse actually. But yeah what a shit movie. Lmao

  3. Reading about it being a single 4.5 hour movie with this just being the first act is a bummer because it's actually an interesting concept, but like...how do you not come out swinging with your opening act?

  4. Should've brought back the Prey at Night director, gonna rewatch that on Max tomorrow

Yeah blowing the concept from the start is part of what really pissed me off besides it just being a bad movie. The other part was that they made a shit remake of the original and couldn’t even do that right.

I was skeptical when Renny Harlin was announced, but I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt because they were doing something cool with it. Now I will never forgive him. I’ll be cursing his name as I sit through the next two movies.

  7. Total crapshoot of a movie. I didn't hate it as much as @digitalsea , but I also don't have the same reverance for the original. I think it looked pretty good and was competently directed, and basically, your mileage may vary with the rest. I don't think it was quite as bad as I've seen people say, but it really is a retread of the original with worse acting, and the scares are pretty much the same old schtick. I did really like the car scene, but I'm struggling to remember if they already did that in Prey at Night.

Just kind of extremely mediocre through and through.

  8. Kinda feel the same about I Saw the TV Glow as I did for We're All Going to the World's Fair: great idea, lukewarm on the execution.

That middle monologue was awesome (a lot of The Vast of Night vibes there), but I would've LOVED to have seen that sequence instead of being told it. And the ending? Eh. Felt like less of a period and more of an ellipsis, which is how the whole movie felt. Sorta one-note, like all the characters.

I REALLY want to like Jane Schoenbrun's work, and I'll keep giving it a chance whenever something new comes out, but I'd really love to see it elevated in her next projects.

OH and Justice Smith was horribly miscast. But Connor O'Malley was amazing as a creep!

Can’t say I agree as I loved the movie. But what in particular makes you say this part?

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

Justice Smith was phenomenal imo, the delivery of "mummy" has legitimately haunted me since I saw that movie weeks ago

I don’t particularly like him or dislike him as an actor, but I thought he did a great job.

  16. Brigette Lundy-Paine brought more emotion out of me; I felt for her every time she was one the screen.

Justice only hit for me on the bleachers and "mommy." Otherwise he came across more as bored/confused--and not in the way that makes sense in context of the movie and its themes. While I appreciate the plight of his character, and can definitely relate to his alienation in my own way, something just felt off and arm's distance in the way that Lundy-Paine made me ache. I feel like the kid actor for Owen had more personality than any age of Owen played by Justice.

  17. I cannot imagine anyone else playing either of those lead roles considering how strong those performances are. But it's also my favorite movie of the year.

(Also, Lundy-Paine uses they/them pronouns, just fyi - not saying that to call anyone out.)

  18. Thank you! Appreciate your clarification. :)

I was watching it with my girlfriend, who was very not into it due to the pacing, so perhaps I had a negative vibe about it. I see people enjoy it even more on the rewatch, so I'll try it again in a few months!

Same for Jane Schoenbrun! (Also not trying to call anyone out)

Im a little biased regarding the movie. Had a great discussion about it at the local queer bar last night. We have a movie night and post discussion panel planned for it next month.

  21. It's unfortunate that the movie can mean so much to trans and other queer ppl and yet just not work for others who are outside of those communities. I'm obviously biased but I do wholeheartedly believe it's something special that's worth watching regardless of your gender or sexual identity

Agree with this so much! I can’t relate to it on that same level, and it doesn’t have to, but it still impacted me deeply. My first thought after it ended was pretty much what you said. It feels really special and I hope it becomes a cult classic thanks to streaming because I think it could be really important to people.

Again, I can’t personally relate to it in the same way, but that gives me hope that more people will find meaning in it, while also learning about what it can really mean to people. Fuck I just hope it finds its audience. I strongly believe it could be a movie that people still bring up 100 years from now if society even still exists.

I’ll say right after it ended I was disappointed because I was expecting a horror film in the more traditional sense. This film is heavy with metaphors, so I can see it not landing with people who went into this blind like myself.

Hopefully more people looked into what this film is about and are willing to give it another chance like myself.
