between this, the amazon guy congratulating trump, and seth meyers saying "i hope he isn't a racist and just said racist things to get votes," i want to make a list of media people to boycott on all platforms.

in my gut, my heart, i agree. and i definitely thought this heading into what i thought was likely a Clinton win.

but another thought i'm bouncing around right now, especially seeing some of talk from the left; there are only so many people you can write off before you will not have enough allies to make an impact. i'm not saying that to defend these guys, i don't know where the line is to be honest. and this isn't to write off valid criticisms of the DNC, Hillary, etc.

Keeping it 1600 have basically apologized and pleaded to the listeners on their new podcast. I found it very legitimate, the sadness is contagious. They even talk about how they forced themselves into believing Hillary was the one, surprised tbh

Another user on here agreed that my post wasn't condescending. I'm sorry you feel that way but it's just how you interpreted my post and I have zero control on how you do that. Especially after I explained my post to you.

Some dude I went to high school with was posting about how it's dumb people will end friendships over political views. Fuck that. People's lives are far more important than any friendship

I'm applying to grad schools for teaching right now. I was considering it before because I think it's in my blood and I'm sick of working in the private sector, but I've become even more motivated the past few days.

Worried I won't be able to afford health coverage in grad school without the ACA, though. :concerned:

Tell him racism and sexism and xenophobia aren't politics. It's right and wrong.

So unfriending overt Trump supporters on fb is the way to go, right? As opposed to not/trying to engage with them?

I think we need to reassess on a case by case basis. If people think that sticking to the same tactics or a right-ward shift, they need to be dismissed. I think, for my part, I have been focused on demonstrating the failures of liberalism, which are valid, but which aren't the basis for solidarity, rather than trying to win the people who supported Hillary to a different political project. That was a mistake. Part of rebuilding the left requires a different pedagogical strategies that can produce intersectional coalitions across class lines to focus on long-lasting, systemic gains. This isn't to say that everyone will become a revolutionary socialist, but it is to say that it'll create a more dynamic left that can actively break the back of Trumpism. It will also require unshackling ourselves from people that would accommodate Trumpism, like Chait.

I won't sugar coat it...teaching is hard as fuck...not the teaching part, but the amount of work you have to do outside of the classroom. And it's more stressful when Republicans are in charge because a lot of them are hell bent on making it even harder. And even some Democrats too.

But it's very rewarding and the health/retirement benefits are worth the lower salary.

Also, check your state regulations...some states will let you get alternative teaching licenses as long as you have a bachelors degree, and then you can go to grad school with help from the district (some districts do this). And some states, like mine, let you get certified for pretty much any subject as long as you have a bachelors degree and pass the Praxis Test in that subject area.

I've been engaging twice as much since Tuesday, probably in an unhealthy way.

yes. i have no desire to engage with racists, xenophobes, misogynists, rapists, anti-semites, and homophobes. there is no changing their minds.

I don't want those people in my life. If they supported trump after everything that happened in the campaign there's no getting through to them. Now if they weren't paying attention to a lot of stuff maybe I'd try engaging. But you said overt.

I always loved history/geography/social studies growing up, and it was my senior year AP US History teacher that made me realize that I wanted ot/would like teaching.

Believe it or not he is a christian conservative lol...but he did a great great job of not letting his biases show in class.
