Machaca festival was famous in Mexico for their mix of genres. In 2022 their headliners were Slipknot, Paulina Rubio, Nicky Jam, Cartel de Santa and Migos. 2023 was Korn, Nelly Furtado, Westlife, FloRida and All Time Low.

This year they rebranded as just a rock fest.

I saw Gaslight Anthem w/Joyce Manor at Summerstage a few weeks ago. Had no idea that Joyce Manor themselves headlined Summerstage (5500-capcity) 3 years back. Good portion of the crowd was there for them, could have probably been billed as a co-headliner at this point.

what im about to say i say as a joyce manor fan: im a bit shocked they can still pull these numbers. their last two albums didnt seem to do much for them (i didnt say they were bad but they didnt exactly light the world on fire) and their set is basically the same as it was about 6-7 years ago.

Not to go too off topic but looking back at the Brooklynvegan posts, that Summerstage show was indeed a ticketed show (thought it might be free) AND Joyce Manor were apparently on tap to open for The Format at the 500-capacity Bowery Ballroom for 3 nights which just seems...odd in retrospect.

Joyce Manor was also meant to open for The Format in Chicago, it was an odd pairing but Im always happy to see Joyce Manor

Yeah just wild that a band who would headline a 5k-capacity venue would then OPEN for a band doing an underplay at a 500 capacity venue.

Are these intentional underplays, or has her draw dropped recently?
I could've sworn she was doing Terminal 5 on recent tours. Plus Goddess is her biggest album.

That’s why I was kind of surprised they opened for The Gaslight Anthem. JM played a huge Long Beach hometown show last year which had like 6-7,000 people in attendance. Then they opened for GA at the Anaheim HOB which has a 2,200 capacity.

I guess there isn’t a huge fanbase-overlap, so maybe that explains it? I like JM, but I would t spend money just to watch them open for Gaslight

The Joyce Manor team does some crazy bookings and I’m here for the dice rolling of each announcement.

  18. I think Joyce Manor is just one of those new-ish bands that a lot of older/legacy bands really like, so they get asked to do those kind of tours. Nate Ruess even did backing vocals on one of their records. It's probably fun to do a lower pressure opening run for a cool band every once in a while and grow their fanbase a bit even if they could headliner the same (or bigger places).

I think it's the same reason certain bands under the "punk" umbrella from the 90s/early 2000s can regularly headline House of Blues-sized venues (e.g., New Found Glory, Less Than Jake, Goldfinger). If a certain type of person get into a band at a certain age they're almost always going to stick with them. And a band like Joyce Manor attracts precisely that kind of music nerd, I think.

Too, when they were initially popping off I think they appealed just as much to college kids as they did to, say, people in their 30s because of the style of music they were playing. So they had a "multi-generational" audience from the jump... And sure, people drop off, but from the looks of the last crowd? They're in a spot where they're continuing to get younger fans too, regardless of how the new albums are doing.

I think this is the best explanation.

Also, come to think of it… Didn’t JM also play Stoked For The Summer this year? Bouncing Souls is another band I think JM is a bit above popularity-wise. But like you said, different audience

To be fair, they played 20 songs in an opening slot which is like...almost their headliner length right?
