Realistically, Gandalf, Aragon, Elrond, Saruman, Radagast, Galadriel, Bilbo, Frodo, Arwen, Denethor, Boromir, Faramir, and Legolas could easily be written into the story considering when it takes place/what we know of Aragorn and Gandalf’s search for Gollum/the identity of the Ring.

Taking into the account how everyone here is supposed to be younger than they are in the trilogy… or the actor has passed away… makes it tricky.

Ian McKellen confirms Gandalf will be in new Lord of the Rings movie

which makes sense considering Gandalf and Aragorn talk about how they hunted Gollum in the books.

 

This could very easily be achieved with an introductory scene similar to Ian Holm's appearance in The Hobbit.

 

For Gandalf, yeah, but with Aragorn it will be trickier. He actually caught Gollum at one point, so I’m not sure how they’ll tackle that. If they’re doing a full re-cast or sticking with Viggo and digitally de-aging
