Huh, had no idea The Defiant were playing. Do I go just to throw shit at them?

Same. I've talked about this with friends but I think it's probably a bit tricky in that, they're probably still friends with Dicky just because they've been friends for so long... I do think it would be very different if he were shouting about this shit on-stage or talking specifically about it in songs.

But it's still not something I want to actively support or engage with. Shit sucks.

It's a small but aggressive group of toxic dorks. There's definitely a Venn diagram but I wouldn't call it a circle... I know a bunch of them don't care about the "schtick" and even oppose it but will say things like "But it's still the same ol' Dicky, maaan! He's the best!"

Remember when Br& New was active and they'd bring a band out on tour and there was always that like, 2.5% of their fanbabse that would worship all of their openers? And then those same people refused to let the band go even after everything? It's very much that same energy. Except the tattoos are worse, the facial hair is more unkempt, and there's a lot more sexism. It's idol worship in a pathetic way. Which is weird because, y'know, Joe Gittleman wrote most of the band's songs anyway...

(Note: I'm not friends with any of these people personally. But one of my close friends spent a lot of time on the Bosstones' forum back in the day and these people still come up to him at shows to talk. It's weird and creepy and I always just walk away when they approach.)

Same! I was wondering what they might open with and honestly, the 1-2-3 punch of Knowledge, Sound System, and Jaded would be amazing... Though that might be too strong. Hah. I could see them mostly doing it in order but swapping out a song or two for the end.

Good news is that Supernova is going first so we may have a setlist to look at before Riot.

Honestly, it's kinda awesome that every time that band gets brought up people are like: "Huh? They're playing?"

When The Defiant was first announced I thought it was going to be one of those bands that only play B-markets, but seeing they have played shows with The Aquabats and NOFX, and now booked for Riot, Im really surprised.

  6. This isn't a scene that's exactly well known for standing up to their friends when they're shitty, so I can't say I'm shocked.

The opened for Me First And The Gimme Gimmes too

  8. How is Public Enemy live? Trying to decide between them and Offspring. Never seen either (or even really listened aside from a couple singles). Offspring has the benefit of being able to keep a decent spot for FOB if I want.

I just saw The Offspring last month play a casino gig and the set was solid! Public Enemy's definitely more rare though, I'd lean towards them if you can't decide or do first half PE/second half Offspring.

your last sentence is definitely a big factor for me as well. band ive seen a few times already but doing a great album play + being right before the headliner i want to see vs iconic a group who are a cornerstone of their genre and rarely play and very well be my last chance to see. its really tough.

editing to add what makes it even harder is i HAVE to see cypress hill, and they overlap with offspring for a few minutes, so i may have to try and bounce early or go directly to the-waiting-for-FOB side, and hope its less packed then the active offspring side

Well, you already know what The Offspring are playing so it should be much easier for you to decide.

You can always see the first half of PE and then come see the last half of The Offspring and get a good spot.

I'm surprised Sum 41 didn't sell out instantly. I expected Hot Mulligan and State Champs to also sell out much quicker.

They’re not listed anymore. Might have been a mistake since they got added to the tigers jaw show at bottom lounge the same day

Damn doing Tigers Jaw and State Champs' shows back to back at the same venue would be lit

I've seen Public Enemy twice. But that was 15-20 years ago. Hah! My recollection is that they were pretty good back then and in watching some clips from the last year or so they still have plenty of energy and both Chuck and Flav sound great! I'm really hoping that they have a live band with them (but expecting a DJ).

So I'm gonna second @ALT/MSC/FAN here and suggest that you watch at least part of Public Enemy unless there's a specific song from Smash that you really wanna hear or something. Splitting the set could work too if you want to get a spot for FOB.

Whatever you choose it'll be a fun set, though, I'm pretty sure. Haha.

The fact that I've seen Smash live twice already plus the Cypress Hill thing made the decision much easier for me. Hah. We'll see if we decide to dip out about 30-45 minutes into their set and see some of the Offspring but... Being able to watch all of Cypress and just turned our heads to the other stage and see P.E. made it a pretty easy decision as to how we were going to start that slot on the schedule. Haha.

Have you seen Cypress Hill before? They're amazing live still but... I'd guess you can time your exit based on recent festival sets and whatever songs you might want to see. They tend to be pretty predictable.

I wonder what time that show will be at. I already plan on seeing NFG that night, but seeing The Offspring at the Metro for free would be awesome.

It’s free but you have to win them from q101. No other way to get them. It’s not like the other pop up shows they do where it’s first come first serve

Oh I realize that. But I just meant the time the show is would influence whether I want to bother trying. If my luck with their past contests is any indicator, I probably won’t get tickets anyway.

Pretty much I want to know if I can kill my self before the fest even really starts by going to both shows in the same night.
