Thinking about how weird it is how Republicans still call themselves "the silent majority" when they've only won the popular vote one single time since the end of the Cold War. That is 1 out of the last 8 presidential elections.

The Hawk Tuah girl is from Tennessee and as a person who lives in TN, I can absolutely guarantee she was raised that you don’t do anything but fill your ballot in red because that’s what god wants you to do. It’s kinda not her fault. It’s so culturally prevalent down here that if you live anywhere outside of a major city, it’s just RED red.

I think it’s weird when people in this thread reject the power of political socialization from a young age just because they were able to make it out of red areas without being a conservative. Literally the only reason I’m not a right leaning centrist is because of this community. Not everyone stumbles upon likeminded leftist groups to help turn them.

 

My Mom this past weekend unfollowed a childhood friend of hers on Facebook, because that woman was tagging my Mom in posts about January 6th and how those people are innocent, some J6 conspiracy stuff, etc. She was kinda sad about it as they were great friends in the past.

Almost everybody confronts something that challenges their views eventually. If you’re in your 20s and hating gay people or are racist I’m not going to make excuses for you. Sure there are powerful reasons someone might be entrenched in those ideas that provide context to challenge them but eventually there is blame for being a bigot.
Anyway this was in the context of the hawk tua girl stanning for Elon which is not exactly part of the Bible Belt cult, it’s more the right wing drifter cult and she’s just selling out. There’s no need to make excuses for her.

 

I mean to be fair to the Haliey Welch (hawk tua girl) I don't think we know how she votes or what her political views are at all. I don't think that one stupid meme lets you make that assumption lol. I do know in her fame hype she's been donating money to animal shelters and stuff so that's cool at least

Right, I was gonna say, unless you're either 1. interested in gov/politics enough to start actually reading up and educating yourself, or 2. You experience some different political socialization via a community online or IRL different from the one you grew up in, you probably aren't shifting your views very dramatically. Like "the mainstream media sucks" is a pretty...well, mainstream viewpoint and if you're not paying attention, all the branding shit musk puts out there about "X" being the place for real news is going to seep into your mind. Plus I'm sure she's just enjoying her face being used for what she thinks is a funny meme expressing a pretty popular sentiment about mainstream news haha

 

But yes overall it sucks and it happens to too many people that get meme'd into popularity.
