It'd be better if they included pressures, passes defensed, and other stuff

 

i'd be good with 1 point per pressure and 2 points per PBU or something like that.

 

but then you're still not actually measuring good coverage in the DBs nor are you rewarding IDL for dominating two blockers so it's still lacking. And a lot of times crediting tackles itself is a flawed system - because at least 50% of plays, one guy only got the tackle because another guy completely shut down where the ballcarrier was originally supposed to go. But that first guy never gets the credit, only the guy that the ballcarrier ran into because he had no choice.

 

I personally hate IDP.

Imagining the game where someone complains that they think the stat is incorrect and asks Matt to show his work and he just dies inside

 

PFF kinda does this but I still don't trust that its always black and white. Even if the PFF stat collector really knows ball there are still scenarios where it could go 3 ways, and you can't know who's fault it actaully was unless you know the play they called AND how the coaches coach that play. Sometimes it can really be 3 different guys fault and its totally subjective how much weight you put on each error. Sometimes it can be 0 guys fault and the other team just called and executed an elite play to thwart your plans, but the grader feels like they have to score someone negative for letting that happen.

Soemtimes when you watch a play 6 or 7 times, you see more detail and realize the guy you originally blamed / praised for the play was not the actual catalyst haha. Football is just way too complex to quantify every little thing.

 

I cannot keep telling you that there is not one single stat collector haha. There are multiple people doing the same game and then that goes up to a senior guy and is fact checked internally by former NFL people.

In all honesty I am 100% certain you can

 

multiple people can still be wrong and be misled by the same thing that LOOKS like it's this guy's fault. It's very common for humans to jump to the first conclusion that "makes sense" and not do their due diligence about questioning if another answer makes even more sense.

former NFL people may still be relying on how their team coached that play and not realize in another scheme that's actually the linebacker's responsibility and not the cornerbacks' when the WR gets a certain amount of depth. Every Cover 2, Cover 3 etc is tailored to how that specific coach likes to spread the responsibility.
