The other thing that's a bit hard to fathom right now with how dreary it all feels is that the second Biden drops out every single center-left news outlet flips the script on Biden. Suddenly is 24 hours of retrospectives on what Biden has accomplished in his career. He and Harris can do a press conference together that's way more jovial. The Atlantic, The New Yorker, NYT - all of them are posting constant toothless opeds about Biden the Overcomer: overcoming tragedy in his own life, and how he got more done than Obama did. Hell, him and Obama can do a whole fucking Vanity Fair cover together. There are more stories about the 'new school' of Democrats, especially since there is no natural successor to Trump, either, because there's no way JD Vance ever gets elected president. Suddenly, the Democrats are the ones with the bright future, and bright new candidates with ideas. The entire story changes the moment he drops out.

The coconut meme is good. I don’t have to vote for either of these shitheads but the coconut meme is really good.

I think what many pundits and bluechecks are severely underestimating and have blinders on about how strong and deep the mood of "I will vote for literally anybody not named Biden or Trump. Anybody but these two" is right now among tons of average working/middle class Americans. Especially among the independents they need to win over.

I know plenty of stereotypical independent voters. They usually vote for change no matter what it is. Sometimes it is as simple as "i am just sick of seeing this guy". Biden/Trump is a no change election from an Independent's POV. I am pretty confident those "Obama in 2008/2012 to Trump in 2016 to Biden in 2020" voters they desperately need will go for Kamala here just solely because she is a different face. Policies don't matter, performance as VP doesn't matter, dem primary performance 4 years ago doesn't matter. None if it matters beyond her not being the same two guys as last time.

Can she form sentences though? I'm sure you can search this thread for countless examples of her bumbling, nonsensical word salads.

I'm not saying she's not a better shot than Biden, but the feeling seems to be that she's a winning candidate when I don't think that's the case. It's not just Biden's age that's the issue, his administration is seen as ineffective, despite some accomplishments, and she bears that burden too (especially since part of her job as vice president is to be out there touting everything they have been able to accomplish).

I agree that you don't need that much to beat Trump, but whatever you need I don't think Kamala has it. And I agree wholeheartedly with your second point, she's basically all we've got if Biden chooses not to run and that's quite unfortunate.

I don’t think she’s gonna mix up Zelenskyy and Putin on live tv. I also don’t think tbh anyone here considers her a sure bet—not like she’s particularly good at campaigning!—but I think the feeling is her nomination wouldn’t guarantee a second Trump term but Biden’s would

The truth is people know almost nothing about Kamala. Her pathway to winning is not to be hated. I think she'd get a bump if she just goes on a campaign that looks semi-competent.

Listen to Biden or Trump vocalize how they feel about an issue, you can barely even translate what either of them are trying to say.

You need to be able to effectively make a case for yourself and Biden has shown that he just can't do that anymore, and she (probably) can. She aint the smoothest speaker herself but at the very least she's not going to have people wondering if her brain is malfunctioning every other sentence because she either flubs a name or stammers/trials off or just sounds like her voice is about to give out. Is that enough to win? I don't know. But it certainly feels way more likely than with Biden right now. I'm sure i'll be relatively disappointed with some of her policies/stances, but I need the judicial nominees and the cabinet at the very least. Hopefully Biden can get her to be pro-union/labor too.
