I liked Pearl better than X but I didn’t find it to be anything special. The House of the Devil is still my favorite of his by a lot

Saw this last night, and I think I liked it? Visually it looked good, but the story was a bit all over the place. For the first hour I sat there wondering if the film had any direction, it felt aimless.

The third act is pretty weak, and I don’t truly understand how she successfully was able to bury the events that happened in X. I didnt understand the news clipping in the envelope, was that an old clipping that somehow tied her to the crime scene in X? Also, the VHS from police evidence clearly shows Maxine on the farm shooting the porno from X. Were the police never able to track her down? Seems hard to believe.

    Did I miss something?

this was a lotta fun. not sure if the third act was a bit of a falloff or if I just got really tired around then but I had a lot of fun with the rest

forgot how insanely stacked the cast was too until the credits starting rolling, damn. really liked Moses Sumney especially, his deadpan delivery was great. could not take Bacon seriously with that Resident Evil 7 ass accent, really bad

I'd have to think on it awhile and let it sit but gun to my head I preferred this to X, so much more engaging cinematographically and just more fun. Pearl is leaps ahead of both

my partner said it was his favorite of the 3. can't rank X and MaXXXine at the moment since they each have their own trade-offs, but Pearl is always my #1.

The cast was stacked but I think that might have hurt it. It felt like a movie where "Hollywood" wanted a piece of it now that Ti West developed something successful.

    Kevin Bacon was bad yes.

Man I really enjoyed Bacon, lol.

  16. Honestly baffled by some of the reactions, thought this was a total blast front to back lol. I can understand some disappointment with it closing a trilogy of films, but with each one doing their own thing, I just absolutely adored the sleazy 80s giallo/De Palma hybrid they had going here. Definitely some over the top moments (Halsey's accent and the New Coke shot made me roll my eyes) but I feel like the set a campy tone early on and if you buy into that, getting to see Kevin Bacon as a cajun P. I. and Maxine facing off against a Christian satanic panic cult at the foot of the Hollywood sign is fucking awesome lmao. Loved all of the practical effects and use of sets/backlots. Goth really is a star in these films

and yes, Pearl is one of the best (and most original) horror films of the decade

Definitely appreciate this more the second time like I did X. The love letter to De Palma/Dressed To Kill/Blow Out pops more when you realize what he’s going for. The themes definitely grabbed a hold more and I found those relatable elements like I did throughout the other two films. I’ll rate this higher than Longlegs, but both suffer from some pacing and “convenience” issues. Pearl is still on another level and a masterpiece, though, while X and this are pretty good. Which is totally fine and makes for a really good trilogy.

Finally seeing this tonight. Loved Pearl and didn’t care for X but I’m excited for the 80s sleaze setting.

I need to see Dressed to Kill. It was immediate De Palma for me while watching this (which I think we already discussed) but prominently Body Double. I've seen both that and Blow Out but have missed DTK.

  21. Dressed to Kill is very good, and Blow Out is excellent. I'm hot and cold on De Palma, but I should try Body Double again.

Thought this was good not great. It’s above X and below Pearl. Didn’t think he totally nailed the 80s sleaze vibe but did pretty good. I thought everyone was great except Halsey. What the fuck was that accent? My brother compared this to once upon a time in Hollywood which I kinda see but then he said he liked this more and I blocked his number.

  23. Lol, spot-on. This is probably not as amazing as I raved about it being, it doesn't all quite come together but I maintain that it's probably the most fun I've had in theaters this year. Great time at the movies
