It’s a good movie that doesn’t live up to the marketing’s high expectations.

my personal gripe with it is the same as Blackcoat’s Daughter: I just don’t think “Hail Satan” is a scary way to end the movie. Nicholas Cage played a freak so well, but the actual reveal that he’s putting some magical demon ball in the heads of dolls was so specific and not as creepy as I predicted. I was guessing the girls were getting possessed and the dads were killing them because they were evil entities now. But the doll just kind of makes them go crazy? Because the devil is in the doll?

I don’t know, the atmosphere at the beginning especially was so perfectly crafted and creepy, but the more they revealed the more let down I felt. The end scene at the “party” never really hit as well as it could have in my mind. And Cage kept getting less creepy and more cartoonish the more we saw him. Great potential for what ends up as a good movie. [\spoiler]

felt that the last scene should have had a little longer to build up the dread and unsettling atmosphere. it moves too fast to be effective enough.

I will say my crowd was mostly engaged, except for someone in the theater who loudly ripped ass right as the title card appeared and had at least my entire row laughing.

They made an encore performance towards the end, as well. Outstanding.

it also basically had sitcom lighting, weird choices to end outside of the stuff with mom being pretty good. I needed evil daughters and we got psychic smoke balls. Oh well.

  10. Also, I know general consensus of Tarot was poor but did anyone see it and was it worth watching for the creature design or nah?

Oh yeah. I think mostly everyone appreciates it and likes it well enough but there are definitely some critiques that probably seem inflated due to all the attention its been getting in its lead-up. I think its absolutely worth checking out (I'm already planning to go see it again Monday) and I'd be surprised if most folks in here don't dig it. I won't elaborate on anything else but check the movie thread after you see it for more of my thoughts.

Was it Tarot that featured creature design from Trevor Henderson? Ive followed him on Twitter for a while and always liked his stuff. Happy he got a great break and was featured in a full length! Never saw it though.

It’s a decent 90-minute watch. The designs are nifty but everything is hindered by the PG-13 rating IMO.

You almost have to watch it for how bad the final 60 or so seconds of the movie are.

The Saw movies are like a horror version of Three's Company where so much could be solved by better communication. Only instead of zany antics it's people getting scalped.

I found to Late Night with the Devil to be really effective. Great performances and visuals. The set really captured the era well. This is the type of movie that will become a staple during October.

  20. Fwiw another tiktoker I trust really liked Longlegs and thought it lived up to the hype, and yet another tiktoker I trust didn't like it as much and thought it was overhyped. I guess it's to be expected that such a well marketed film will have such a divisive reaction

I’m not saying he still isn’t pretentious or a hater, but the interviewer brought up MaXXXine in the question. Everywhere seems to be leaving that part out. He doesn’t pick that out of nowhere. lol

Arcadian was pretty good. The creature design is really unique and I was not really on board at first but by the end, it worked for me. A lot of great emotional beats and some pretty good performances throughout. The pendulum swings in the other direction for Nic Cage and his performance after seeing Longlegs yesterday

Perkins is obviously free to think and feel and decide whatever he wants, but seems like he’s doing himself a disservice. Like he’d probably appreciate and/or get something out of Pearl and The First Omen for example. Hasn’t seen Hereditary? There’s modern horror films out there better than his so it’s just odd.

Anyway, I’m clearly still a fan and look forward to his future work.
