Yeah, the vocal melodies on this thing are very heartfelt and catchy.

also: good thing I have like twelve weeks before my next turn because I have absolutely no idea wtf I’m gonna go with yet

I also think the second half is much stronger. I think they could’ve cut a song from the first half, 54 minutes feels long for this

This was pleasant to return to, but I definitely liked this more when I was 10 years younger. I take back my Death Cab and MovMou comparison and would agree with @I Am Mick that it’s closer to an indie Cute is What We Aim For, or bands like Daphne Loves Derby, Mae, early Copeland.

Best songs are in the second half as others said, when they allow the instrumentation to sprawl a bit more. I’ve always been big on Ready/Not Ready. Knots and the closer are also standouts.

I highly rec their last album if you enjoyed this one at all. It’s much more “adult,” I’d say, and stylistically closer to MovMou, Appleseed Cast, The Cast Before the Break…

Loom had some moments that really reminded me of Umbrellas, a band I completely forgot until now. I think I actually prefer Nothing Happens though

Still dug the Pompeii record, but the vocals are one of the least interesting aspects for me personally. It's like they don't really suit the ambient elements imo. It's wild how different some things can sound when all these years have passed

So true about the passing of time. I would’ve disagreed with you before my listen yesterday based on my memory of the album, but feel similarly about the vocals now. Probably why I prefer Loom.

Listening to it now actually for the first time in awhile and it’s great. Way more my vibe.

  11. Only heard their first album before, but this is really nice so far. Elements of the last Moving Mountains album and twinkly emo with more pop-leaning vocals is such a perfect combination for my tastes.

    In Motion-era Copeland vibes too.

Still jamming that Fela Kuti along with all his other shit. It’s been a journey but I’m fkn obsessed. Thanks again @Long Century.

Big shame bc this thread rules when people actually are active. Honestly not sure why most people are still on the list.

most people in the thread show up for their week and maybe one or two of their friend’s picks and are otherwise unheard from. it’s gotta give at some point tho

Sorry! Please remove me from this list, and let someone else pick a record, I'm not active enough on this site, and I'd be just taking up space from those that do participate.

Also, my apologies for holding up the thread.

hey, @Wharf Rat I've got a list of about ten albums that I’ve been trying to choose from for my next pick. seriously considering about four or five of them. if I sent you a message and listed said albums, could you maybe help me choose one?

  24. then it's @troyplaysbass on deck

also, fwiw, I feel like there are a good number of people that weigh into varying degrees, not every record is gonna be for every person and I don't exactly expect everyone to have a dissertation on each pick. doesn't mean people aren't listening. just my two cents

  25. I'm going to pick the final Weakerthans album, Reunion Tour.

I don't know if maligned is the right word, but this one tends to be a little forgotten in their discography, coming after the masterpiece that is Reconstruction Site. It's kind of a short story collection, each song introducing a different character (or cat) and adding up to a kind of patchwork quilt of Canada. John K. Samson has talked about his solo work being inspired by the way that we often learn about ancient cultures through their shopping lists and market signs, how it's the slices of daily life that get preserved and passed down even if the great epics of the time are lost or fragmented, and I think he really started writing in that way on this album.
