3k has no interest in being taken seriously as a flute artist though. He’s just playing for his own enjoyment. That’s a different situation IMO

I can kind of sympathise with this sentiment because I am an old head, but then again I think there are plenty of rappers who stick to rapping that don't care about the culture, whereas some who make other music still do, so it's not as simple as that to me

  3. I just don't understand the notion that he only stretched his genre restraints to appeal to an audience he already had?

I feel like they meant other kinds of white people, those who disregard rap

  5. Okay, but at the expense of alienating his current audience then? It just doesn't make much sense to me as a superficial move. I'm not some huge Yachty fan, but I struggle to see him making that album purely to appeal to a non-rap crowd for some reason.

Also, and I can't state this often enough: rappers like bad rock music. Always have, always will. It's the seventh element of Hip Hop (making top five lists is the sixth).

I'm not sure he has much of an audience to be fair. Didn't his debut famously go double glass despite the hype? Maybe he has turned things around and I don't know about it, but the whole Yachty discourse always seemed one step removed from reality to me, haha.

  8. the main issue that article identifies is the idea that you cannot be “taken seriously as just a rapper” which does seem to be pervasive but again dude was 13 when Rebirth came out…like I get why people would think that. it’s wrong and silly but Yachty didn’t invent it.

and if it’s an issue of confusing switching genres with innovation, that’s a whole other where the question becomes if Yachty like, understands the concept of innovation lol. but i think that’s a leap to attribute that to Yachty especially now when he is branching out in a completely different direction. as of right now - which is not when that article was written tbf - the most fair interpretation of Yachty saying he wants to branch out and not be just a rapper is to take at face value and not attribute too much weight to the word “just.”

Saw him at Coachella this year with a giant white crowd and no one cares for the Let’s Start Here stuff tbh, they only popped off when he did his rap hits in the middle

  10. Yeah, I was gonna say, I feel like the easier way to stay successful with a white audience would be to keep up with the mid-2010s pop-rap he was popular for or anything that sounds Kanye-adjacent lol.

there are a few I like but I admittedly haven’t revisited it much lately

  13. This conversation has made me revisit the psyche album and it's aight so far. Obviously nothing mind-blowing for the genre, but honestly pretty pleasant. Just feels kind of slight. Maybe I'll give the James Blake collab a spin.

  14. Speaking of white audiences, I regret to inform you all that I've discovered Joey Valence & Brae and reluctantly enjoy their silly Beastie Boys worship shit

this kind of turned out to be a more nuanced discussion than it was and I can appreciate that

This is the heart of conservativism

I cant get behind the argument he's selling out to white people by doing a hip-hop psych rock album in 2020s, that's not a trend we support. Last time it was attempted ambassador Ronald McDonald gave Kudi a zero.

Yeah, Yachty’s stuff is maybe too inconsequential to even debate. Even Lets Start Here is just “there” and makes for a cozy listen. I’ll give the James Blake collab a shot since peeps are talking about it but I don’t like either artist anymore lol.

I feel like we've just "known" each other long enough now in the context of this thread that we give each other room to think-aloud

  24. Two guys that went to Penn State, a college very close to me, I guess lol. I was recommended them on Spotify because I listen to Danny Brown and he guests on this track:

I don't know if it's good, and it's certainly shameless, but it's pretty infectious lol. The beat on this one is pretty nice too:

  25. i just feel like i’d rather listen to the actual Beastie Boys than any worship act
