In my opinion, it’s been a real fun year of music so far. Some familiar names, some new faces, and a great year for punk and pop-punk adjacent music. Dare I say the scene is alive and well? That Super American album has just flat out dominated the last few months for me, and with the summer weather ahead, I don’t see it slowing down anytime soon. It’s the most fun I’ve had with an album this year and takes the top spot (so far). I’m excited to see what the back half of 2024 has in store for us.

The Stats: For the first half of the year, I’ve listened to 856 albums, 366 artists, and 7,784 songs (12,382 scrobbles). My most played album of the year so far is Sum 41’s Heaven :x: Hell. My most played artist so far this year is MxPx. If you’d like to follow my weekly listening habits, please subscribe to my newsletter.

Jokes aside, I love this list. It has some of my personal favorites from this year (Knocked Loose, TDS, Waxahatchee, SYSC, Charli), some stuff I need to revisit (Billie, Maggie Rogers, Bayside, YC), and a decent amount that I'm unfamiliar with (Barely Civil, Katie Pruitt, DIIV, Casey, Snarls, Carly Pierce).

My #1 didn't even make this list! Middle Kids - Faith Crisis, Pt. 1 is such a good record, and clearly people are sleeping on it. Get on it!

It's definitely in my top 5. And where the hell is Microwave? The only album from my top 10 that made it into these is Mannequin Pussy. Alien Ant Farm and Strung Out on here is wild. There have been so many good releases this year already. I'm still catching up.

This has been my feeling all along too. It got pretty clowned on across the internet when it came out and I really don't understand why. Just a fun, super catchy album that brought back a lot of the things I've always loved about that band and jettisoned most of the shit that hadn't been working for them over the past decade plus.

The second I saw Green Day was the combined number 1, I knew people were going to scoff.

I'm not the biggest Green Day fan, but I couldn't agree more. Saviors is a pretty perfect GD record, and the first time I've enjoyed something of theirs start to finish in a long ass time.

Highly recommend that Katie Pruitt album. Seems like something a lot of people around here would like, but just haven't heard about.

That's one where I feel like it would have gotten a lot more love if the band making it hadn't been Green Day. They're in that class of "well-known rock band" now that will always be an easy punching bag no matter the quality of the albums (see also: Coldplay). But in the melody department especially, I think it's one of the stronger rock records I've heard in a minute.

I think it's just a matter of being a shared reference point at a time when listening is increasingly disparate/spread out. No one put it number 1 (and my list was the only one where it landed top 5), but it showed up on five out of the six lists.

Also the Bleachers and Alk3 records didn't do much for me but perhaps I'm missing something. Will give them both more of a chance.

So, I don’t mind having a lot of pop artists on here, but does anyone have any recs for websites/resources that are a little more alt/indie/rock oriented? I love and appreciate this site, but feel like my tastes have diverged a bit from the staff and would like to find some new music.

That being said, I’ve been digging into older music this year, but new Pedro the Lion, Microwave, and From Indian Lakes are cool.

Also, are there a lot of pop artists on here? 102 different albums, like maybe 10-12 I'd consider classic "pop." 21/30 in the main list feel pretty much in the "indie/alt/rock/hardcore/punk" vein.
