The "ON" just tells how to assign things from table B onto table A. It ensures that the things in table B match up appropriately with the things in table A.

So like if table A is a list of names with a first name field and a last name field

And table B has random fields including a last name field

I could join table A to table B "ON" tableA.lastname = tableb.lastname and that would ensure that as the fields are listed out, the fields from tableB for that last name are listed in the same row as tableA where it shares that last name

If there was no join there wouldn't be a way for sql to know how table B rows need to be attached to table A rows
