Kevin Costner Talks Spending $20M on Horizon, Yellowstone Future

"Costner then got laughs from the crowd by looking out the window and pretending to consult with his attorney about how much money he was being offered. I just saw an interview where he says he spent $38 million on it.

 

I think the films have a decent chance of success; the Yellowstone crowd is huge in the US (and around the world; lots of people here in Oslo have watched it), and so I think if they show up, and a decent chunk of the wider public, they should do fairly well. Which should help Costner and co get close to break even on the project. If marketing is done right, they will come

 

I've never seen a minute of yellowstone, and I know a lot of people like it and are tired of it being 'political' and being lumped into the 'culture' wars, but this just screams of such a rehearsed 'what the people want to hear' answer. 'I don't need the money because I'm a mans man who can work outdoor with my hands'.

 

Honestly, my take on it is that it was less about money per se and more about egos / who is top dog, and he really wanted to go make his Horizon movies.

 

It’s definitely an ego thing but he wouldn’t be relevant anymore without Yellowstone

 

I remember reading this big long profile of Taylor Sheridan around the time this whole thing came to a head, and I just remember thinking after reading it that of all the stars in Hollywood that could have ended up headlining a huge, successful, wildly popular Taylor Sheridan show, Kevin Costner - based on everything I have ever read or heard about him over the years and decades - was like the Perfect Storm level wrong choice

 

sorry, not to thread bomb - but I honestly think he knows this, and felt this was his only / last chance to get something like Horizon made, and he used the clout & relevance he had to get it done

So basically he's just going to die offscreen or decide he wants to retire to the Bahamas and leave the politics/ranching life behind.

If this show hadn't already gone so far off the rails and spun its wheels for like three seasons now, I would be a little sad that it lost its lead right before the final season, but at this point.... I don't even care.

 

Will be pretty interesting to see how they write him off the show; I'm guessing some kind of offscreen death (so they then don't need Costner on set), which ends up fast-tracking the family selling off/transferring the ranch to the local Indian tribe, which was hinted at in the prequal show 1883 in the last episode.

 

I was actually a very big fan of Taylor Sheridan for years now, and think Wind River is a severely underappreciated classic, but I have to say that all of the mythologizing of him in the press is extremely fucking annoying and has turned me off of watching any of his stuff for a while.

I almost always prefer shows or movies with a singular driving creative force as opposed to things that are creatively driven by committee, and he is someone that established extremely strong creative control of his various projects, and that worked great for a while, but he absolutely bit off more than he could chew and took on more projects than he could effectively maintain that type of quality at.

I do think there are probably a ton of working TV directors and writers who could make amazing shows with similar creative control as to what he was given, albeit to a slightly lesser extent.

It is always a double-edged sword though: Peter Jackson forced to compromise delivered the Lord of the Rings trilogy while Peter Jackson given complete creative control shat out the Hobbit movies.

I realize this is a very long and rambling post, but I suppose it is a long-winded way of saying that when you make Kevin Costner seem less egotistical and more reasonable than you, something is probably amiss.

Still no confirmation of any returning cast huh...... starting to look like it's an all brand new cast.

 

Well back in July.. Kelly Reilly posted an Instagram post from the set of Yellowstone and so they have resume filming for a while now but will any of the returning cast members will reprising their roles for this spin off remains to be seen.

 

Yeah there was talk originally how, since it's rumored that the Yellowstone story will finish with the ranch being given to the Indians, and then some of the characters moving down to the 6666 ranch, so the spinoff initially was talked about being set there. But now it appears that idea has been abandoned and instead they're doing a whole new cast for the spinoff.

 

Ahh. Well I guess while I'd like to see them reprise their roles and continue on l, I wouldn't be opposed to to seeing the actors in a new role then.

Yeah I remember those rumors too. If so, it'll be a nice closing out to the story for sure and the most expect fed tbh.

 

I was looking forward to see what The Four 6666's would be like, I read in an interview with Taylor Sheridan that this was gonna be his most personal project out all of the ones he's done so far.. I would guess it would be way more grounded and more of a slice of life type of show.
