Re: AI, I’m gonna get real boomer on this, but I think a lot of folks our age are assuming students today are like we were in school, where there was a certain pride in learning something new and etc, but, ever since smartphones took over, and especially since the pandemic, most of the students don’t seem interested in using AI in small, minimally assistive ways that make them better at a skill they’re learning—they want it to do all the work for them and not learn the skill at all. I’ve sat there and watched their computer screens as they’ve used it, knowing full well I could be watching at any moment, and they’re just using it to cheat lol. Even my AP students, there were very few in that class I would trust is currently mature and skilled enough to use AI in constructive, assistive ways. I had one kid flat out tell me he knew two of his classmates were using AI to answer questions on our first test. And the kids I suspected because he didn’t want to name names were like top 15 in their class. Theres just a very widespread attitude of “none of this is important just get the grades” amongst high school kids that got exponentially worse after covid hit.

I would love for someone to teach me how to use AI though because I keep hearing how useful it can be for stuff and I don’t have the first clue on where to start lol

Natural conclusion of schools only caring about aps and college placement which was happening when I was in school

If you have ever listened to bill spadea’s radio show you know how insane this guy is. I’d actually be terrified to see how horrible he would try to make this state if he somehow won.

To be fair this attitude is reinforced across the board. Whether it's standardized tests as a college evaluation metric, to budgets and funding pegged to test scores, to needing six or seven extracurriculars to stand out, there's very little opportunity or encouragement for a kid to dive deep into something that interests them because there are a dozen other things they have to juggle to "make it."

and being “career ready”. Everything is about how to make sure they’re ready to be “in the real world” which yeah is important, but part of the school experience is supposed to be fun and trying shit out for free that you’re never gonna get to do for free again. I miss out on so many kids in my AP gov class because either the colleges they’re applying to don’t take AP Gov credit or because it’s not “important” to their college or career major/plans, so the counselor tells them not to take it. Like okay but what about just having a curiosity and interest in learning about our government and politics? Lol. Or the fact that govt/pol affects literally everyone regardless of your college major or whatever.

like usually a lot of the STEM minded kids don’t take AP Gov because it’s not STEM related so I miss out on some super smart kids that would bring so much to the class. This year though for whatever reason a lot of the STEM kids took it and they turned out to be the most engaged/best kids in the class

I hated learning in school and took the easy way out as often as I could so I could fuck around and play video games

and working on top of it. Some of these kids try doing loaded coursework and play a sport and have a job and I’m like damn dude, give yourself some time to breathe lol. We also have a ton of kids who make it to senior year with all the credits they need to graduate and end up taking reduced schedules so they can work. I don’t necessarily hate that, but at the same time I don’t think it should be encouraged as much because again, it’s free classes you can take and maybe develop another hobby or interest rather than being a cog in the machine for another year or whatever. BUT part of that comes back to the kids not really being motivated to do school work when they can get paid to do a job instead.
The “return” on taking another class and learning a new skill or hobby or interest doesn’t appeal to them the same way it did to me when I was in HS. That’s boring to them and they’d rather just work the BS part time job because at least it comes with some pay and “experience”. Like I took AP US History and Floriculture and Wildlife Management my senior year even though I didn’t really “need” to…they were just interesting classes to me. (Though now that I think about it, it’s possible we had higher credit requirements to graduate back then than they do now and I just needed to fill out my schedule or something. I do have vague memories of needing like .25 credits or something like that and that’s why I took floriculture lol)

  11. I have learned a lot, it's just unfortunately mostly outdated SQL or bespoke software

Yeah that's super rough, I never touch SQL anymore so it's very scary when my product owner tries to ask me to jump into an old database for her. It's truly an ugly syntax.

I can select and insert data in one table. Anything beyond that is gonna be a problem haha

I knew plenty of kids like this:shrug:Of
Course we all fucked around and did off task shit all the time, but kids would actually try to acquire new knowledge and skills in at least some of their classes, even if they didn’t really know that’s what they were doing. For me that was social studies and English classes, but I def remember the kids in my group in Physics actually giving a shit about trying to figure out the bridge project or whatever we were doing while that was more of a “okay I kinda like this but I don’t care that much about it” class for me haha

math lost me at algebra 2. Would love if it we didn’t force every kid to take algebra 2 and above, but that would involve tracking kids I think. But I would have much rather preferred taking personal finance instead of algebra 2 for my last math credit. I liked Geometry though.

but really I wasn’t a nerd nerd…I also hated doing homework or anything outside of school lol. If it was in class I would do it mostly, but once it became homework, I was checked out.

  17. I jokingly offered a friend with much better experience a job in my department and they were like "i will never work in insurance or banking [me] or medical" because they're notoriously out of date in a lot of ways. I like SQL a lot actually and DB architecture is super interesting to me but yeah I tried to post a question on stack overflow once and they were like why are you writing sql like it's 2006 and i was like man

  18. it me.

Haha, I think my web dev skills ended at like 2008. But that can still get you pretty far and more than like 90% more than anyone else knows.

I remember using SparkNotes whenever I could which I guess is the millennial version of chatgpt

only had to do in-class essays in AP classes, which sucked

I work in one of those three industries and yep, very accurate. Although we've been pushing HARD over the last few years to rewrite everything and use cloud technologies and openapi schemas. Our customers have been really excited about how advanced the APIs are on our team now, so that feels good. And no need to create our own UIs anymore because customers can just point their stuff to our endpoints.

Having to send our shit down to old ass systems still sucks though. Mapping a bunch of our JSON to several types of xml schemas is quite annoying.
