It’s funny I think it took me two tries initially to get into inquisition far enough to even get to skyhold since it’s a solid 10 or so hours into the game but after you do that story quest and arrive at the new fortress you’re like oh holy shit this game is fucking MASSIVE and realize everything you just did for the last 8-12 hours has been the prologue lol

    Player's Log: Sigma Star Saga

So I've been playing this all day and I'm maybe a third of the way through the game, maybe more. Hard to gauge.

As I said previously, it's an interesting hybrid of RPG and shoot-em-up, and it works like this. The bulk of the game takes place in an overhead Zelda-style view where you explore, converse, and fight. It's actually kind of like Blaster Master, if that makes sense.

While there is combat in that mode, there are also random battles, except the random battles are in the form of a small shoot-em-up level, where you need to either take out a number of targets or one big target. You earn experience for each enemy you kill, and your stats increase with each level.

In the main game you can also find various weapon chips that you can select for your ship and combine to make new dangerous toys for you to use in space. It offers a lot of variety among the different weapons you can assemble.

What's also interesting is that for plot reasons, when you get called into space via random battle, you might not always be piloting your usual ship. For example, sometimes you might be piloting a giant lumbering cargo ship. It makes for a bit of variety in your encounters.

It's actually a quite clever way of combining the two genres. While this is not the first game to do this, I've never encountered a game that's balanced it quite so well. And the game does feel appropriately balanced, for the most part.

The plot is space faff though. Earth's been attacked by aliens, and you're infiltrating the enemy, except who is the real enemy? The friends we made along the way. There's also a development where the two female co-stars both fall for the protagonist because it's what the plot demands.

I'll have to play through the game twice, because there are actually four possible endings, but two of them (including the true harem ending) can't be obtained until you beat the game once, which is a drag. Fortunately I have some cheat codes that will make the second run a bit less strenuous.

Pikmin 3 and 4 need to be treated with the same love other Nintendo games get because the fact at least 4 doesn't show up in many people's favorite Nintendo games list is a crime.

it was the same with Cyrus in the first one, the Analyze skill is too useful to bench Osvald. But if you have to rotate him out you can always eliminate weaknesses if you go by the order:

About 3 hours into Citizen Sleeper, the writing in this game is really good, I mentioned saying it scratched the itch of Disco, and while I think both are exceptional showcases of writing in video games, it's amazing how much Sleeper does with, so far at least, a lot less words and inner monologues.

...I also want to go back to Disco Elysium now lol

finished second playthrough of 8Doors: Arum's Afterlife Adventure! well, kinda. I did everything necessary for the "true" ending and got 100% on the map, but damn, the final boss is a four part fight that's too difficult even on story mode, fuck that. I just watched the endings on YouTube, again. but my save game says i got 100% completion so I'm happy.

story mode really helped to better appreciate the, uh, story. I wasn't dying a dozen times to every boss. I focused on finding everything there was to be found, I actually talked to NPCs, got a clearer understanding of what was really going on. the "good" ending is, uh, good. but the true ending is so rewarding narratively. definitely worth getting all the flower petals and mirror fragments. and there's so much lore and worldbuilding I didn't get the first time, I guess because I was struggling just to get through the game.

I haven't played a metroidvania I disliked, but upon playing this again it's shot up on my list of favorites for sure.
